Quick update - they narrowed it down to a failed MDS solenoid. Part is on order and they expect to have it done and ready to be picked up Monday afternoon.

And, the truck still has a powertrain warranty active on it, that I did not know about, so no cost to me!!!

thats good news! did they say it would have been safe to drive?

Other than diagnosing the issue, they said it could have caused damage to the valve train if I had kept driving it - being stuck in 4cylinder mode while trying to accelerate could lead to broken valve springs or damaged lifters.

Well, got the truck back tonight. MDS solenoid was replaced and all is fine. No more loss of power, no more shaking/vibrating. And, with the powertrain warranty, it was 100% covered, no charge.

And, got it back just in time for the snow storm thats supposed to hit tomorrow...

Well **** me sideways...

Problem came back this morning on the way to work. On the way home tonight, CEL came on and flashed for about 5 seconds and went out - checking with my cheap scanner, I got a "P0300 Cylinder 1 misfire detected" code. Checked it out when I got home - plug is not fouled out and the misfire does not follow the coil pack when I move it to another cylinder.

And, the dealer is booked full until next Friday. Truck is currently undrivable and the only loaner they have is a PT Cruiser with 400k miles on it that needs 1qt of oil every time you fill the tank. Can't pull a 7500lb trailer with that thing and none of the rental places around here have trucks, it's all cars and CUVs (not even SUVs, just the under powered wanna be versions).

Really considering trading it for an unsold 2016 EcoDiesel crew cab after this...

Damn man sorry to hear that. By swapping the coil pack you've basically ruled out ignition, what about fuel? I would think if it were a mechanical problem like a lifter it wouldn't be intermittent like this...

How many miles on the truck?

The last few miles, it was anything but intermittent. It is definitely running on 6 or less cylinders at this point. :puke:

Thanks for the response. I'm currently waiting for the tow truck to show up. The dealership is expecting it there today, though they are backed up with other vehicles that do not run. It will be a few days before they get to it. It's understandable. There isn't anything that can really be done to expedite it, but it would be really nice to have my truck running right now - I'm not able to do my part time job right now because I need a truck able to pull 7000 pounds of equipment around.

Until then, I'll just have to drive the racecar to and from my day job.

Unless it snows, then I'll just take a vacation day... :roflsquared:

Yes and no - they replaced the MDS solenoid on the first go round, then they replaced the coil pack, stating that they moved the coil pack and the miss fire followed to the new location, which it did NOT when I attempted that.

Not sure what they actually did, but the truck does NOT perform like it used to, full throttle feels like a V6 truck pulling a Sherman tank now. Guess they "death flash" they had for the 2nd Gen trucks has been ported over to the 4th Gen trucks as one of the items on the receipt showed numerous PCM/TCM flashes... :sad72:

Damn that really sucks. I know Ford had a "detuned" PCM flash for the 6.0 and 6.4 Powerstroke that detected one injector that was low performing it would lower the other 7 so the engine would run smooth. Wonder if they did something similar.....

Not sure. I've complained it doesn't perform like it used to, they said shouldn't be an issue because they just replaced the coil pack and reset the system so the MIL would be off.

Guess it's either time to buy a tuner or find a different truck. Anyone know when the EcoDiesel trucks will be back on sale? lol

Go for the tuner! Plus it'll be a lot cheaper than an Ecodiesel

I would get a Diablosport tuner because you can get custom tunes for it. The two models they offer are the Trinity and the Intune. The Trinity has live data monitoring which is nice if you want to monitor all kinds of things on the truck. The Intune is an iPhone sized tuner that simply tunes the truck.

There's also Bullydog tuners which I know nothing about but I don't believe they support custom tuning.

The two major custom tuners are Hemifever (Sean Powell) and Jay Greene. Both are great at what they do. I have 0 experience with Jay but lots of people are very happy with his tuning.

I personally have Hemifever tuning and I can tell you it really wakes up the truck.

Either way you go it's going to be better than the stock tuning, especially after what they did to it at the dealership.

Yeah that's definitely something to try and it's free. Disconnect the battery for a good 30 mins and see what happens...
