Good oil sounds like a plan.

You could go to the synthetic oil thread at about page 800 and read up, or read it alllllll......lol

I would go with Amsoil SS and their filter is great, T H E I R.

The lesser Amsoils have not analyzed well, but the SS has been awesome in uoa's. You can make a good argument it is the best oil, especially for a long oil change interval. Their filter is spun microglass and will outlast the oil as well.

There is an UOA in the Synthetic oil thread towards the end of it, like the last 100 pages or so, that in the same Truck Amsoil SS, Pennzoil Platinum, and Amsoil XL were tested in the same truck. The Amsoil XL looked pretty bad, and the Amsoil SS looked great as well as the PP looked great. I was able to find it, lol. edit..

Got lucky... Take a close look at the wear and miles on these oils. Look for the red that says which oil belongs to which column. Amsoil SS great, Amsoil XL not so much, lots of copper. Now, the XL was used in a early engine which could lead to more wear, but look at the different additives, SS is better plus is widely known to have a better base oil. Look at visc at 100, SS has a better visc eventhough both oils started the same weight 5w30 and high flash point= hints at better base oil. Most important, LOOK at the TBN. XL very unimpressive but Amsoil SS could go another 10k miles.

So what I'm trying to say this is my best case for you to step up to Amsoil SS instead of any of their lesser oils. It is worth it, the uoa's are pretty clear. You can run the oil longer as well, it pays for itself. That high Calcium, really allows you to easily go 5k more miles then any other oil Amsoil has.

I ran Amsoil 5w20 SS for three years and it was rock solid, just had my first oil analysis done not to long ago and it came back really good.

I'll be going to synthetic on my 3rd oil change at about 6500 miles. I'm sticking with an FCA Mopar approved Pennzoil Ultra Platinum for a while due to warranty/record keeping and stuff on this new one.

However, if Pennzoil doesn't get a handle on distribution of it, I'll probably end up using Amsoil SS eventually.

Here is and interesting link with some really goog oil testing data. It's about 6 hours of reading (took me 7 lol) but very worth it. He also has a questions and answers section that has been very helpful, even Wil test your oil of choice if not on his list already. But he's backed up about a month right now, I'm sending him a Q of 5w20 Amsoil to see how the film strength holds up to his testing. I think your at a minimum find his data interesting.

Eventually I will be going back to this stuff...It worked for 1.3 million miles so far in all my other H.D. trucks since 1988...Staying loyal to 4-5k mile oil and filter changes has been working fine for me...(5w30)
