Hello,

Tomorrow I plan on changing the oil in my Ram. I have decided to do it my self instead of having some one else do it. Are there any tips you guys have for me? also what size is the drain plug? I have read 9/16th" and also 1/2".

I already bought my oil, filter, oil drain pan, filter wrench, and a funnel. I think I should be set.

Use a plastic bag for the oil filter. Back your filter off til you see oil starting to come down the side, then just put a gallon bag around the filter and twist.

I see you have a 2013? Never mind, I thought this was the trucks first change. I cut my filters open often, more to check the media, you can read Synthetic oil thread for more info. For cutting I use one of these, the half moon is the cutting blade. Works a charm.

Done - that was cake. Probably took me just as long to clean up as to actually do it. thanks for the plastic bag tip! Probably would of made zero mess but I removed it slowly and the oil ended up ripping the bag... still didn't really make much of a mess at all though.

I use a cut 2liter soda bottle , instead of the bag. I don't cut my filter open,I don't think that's part of a oil change. LOL

Get a filter glove, works great for the 5.7 filters!

what size wrench did you use? I thought our drain plugs were metric sized.

Yeah the filter cup is a great idea or any one of the plastic bags since our filter is above the front axle. Makes such a mess.

The 13MM fit perfect. Good stuff guys. Does anyone use a mat or something to lay down and that can take absorb any spilled oil? I had cardboard laying around this time but may not next time.

I always keep cardboard in the garage for exactly this reason...

I didn't end up cutting it, but I think he was referring to cutting it open for new trucks on their first oil change. He seems to be really into oil, along with a few other guys on this forum, so I assume they just want to see how everything performed.
