What's everyone running for a fuel additive? What documented or perceived results have you had?

I throw a bottle of Lucas upper cylinder lubricant in my tank every 3000 miles or so. I've had good luck with it restoring power and gaining 1-2 mpg. Especially on higher mile engines.

I use Lucas fuel treatment as well. I don't really have a schedule for it, pretty much whenever I think it's been awhile, probably every 4th or 5th fill-up. Sounds to me like it really quiets injectors and smoothes idle.

I pour in 5~6oz Pennzoil (Marine) TCW3 with a full tank of 89oct. ~~~>640:1 ratio
(Every other Full Tank) ~~~> I do this in ALL the family autos as well as lawnmower.

Every 6 months I add 2 bottles with a full tank of either 15oz RL SI~1 or 12oz Schaeffers Neutra/Soy Ultra.

Anything containing PEA is going to be some what effective if any type of carbon deposits are present.

I add these Fuel Additives for Possible Preventive Maintenance as well as Piece of Mind.

As for documenting proof? (None) That would consist of head removal or bore scope pics! Not going to happen here!
As for the TCW3? Sarges 3~4 year testing was good enough for me.

Now the REAL question has Always been ~~~>Are these additives really needed?
In my mind it is similar to asking ~~~>Was there really a world wide flood & was there really a ARK built?

Seach ChrisFix on YouTube. He uses cameras to take before and after pictures/videos of the cylinder heads after running cleaners.

I am a converted non-believer in fuel additives.

I have a KTM 990 Super Duke (made in Austria) that was just a pig to get started, especially after I'd had sat for a while. I ran a couple bottles of Lucas Oil FI Cleaner thru that motorcycle, and it fires right up now. Fuel economy has gone up, also. I will never trust anybody's butt dyno. But you can't argue faster start ups, and hard numbers.

I use Sea Foam now, as kind of a maintenance program. I have a lot of things with engines that don't get used all that often, so fuel additives have gotten used more, in recent years, at my place.

I have used Lucas for awhile now with great results. Can't say I have gained any mileage or anything on my newer vehicles but I feel it's a great preventative. Been putting it in our old pickup at work with 200,000mi & it is now running smoother & the check engine light goes out. Had one of our larger Class B Diesel Trucks running rough & it fixed that too in one treatment.

Redline S1 or Amsoil PI, both engineered to clean with PEA (polyether amine) and be an upper cylinder lube. Most other PEA cleaners have a fraction what these two have. Always check the msds, PEA % should be noted. Most other cleaners are solvent based not detergent like PEA. Explain how adding a solvent to a solvent will clean better? Sea Foam is great if used in crank case or vacuum straight into combustion chamber. Upper cylinder lubes are great, but you probably don't want to use them on their own long term, maybe run a little techron every couple months if you just use lucas.

How often and how much of the S1 is to be used? I know the Amsoil is only supposed to be used every 4000 miles. That's one of the reasons I use the Lucas treatment is because any over treatment will not hurt. I'm more concerned about it cleaning away something that shouldn't be cleaned away.

I get Costco gas, so I use it every tank 1/2 bottle s1. I always get it less then 10 bucks shipped free from ebay if you buy 6., Amazon cheaper if you buy a case. With new ethanol mandates, great to have the upper cylinder lube and cleaner all-in-one.

Yeah, that's what I was looking for, a UCL and cleaner all in one.

According to manufacturers' SDSes, below are the percentages of PEA listed in their products by volume:

1. Amsoil PI- 25-50%

2. Redline S1- 25-35%

3. Lucas DEEP Clean- 10-30%
-- Note Lucas' UCL/FI cleaner does not list PEA as an ingredient.

4. Royal Purple Max Clean- 5-15%

5. Chevron Techron- Lists "Trade Secret" 3-7% *PEA Not listed by name

6. BG 44k- Lists "Stoddard Solvent" as active ingredient 10-30% *PEA Not listed by name

Versus ounces and cost.

Redline 15 ounces - less then $10 shipping free
Amsoil PI 12 ounces - ?
Chevron techron -12 or 20 ounces- sold at every Chevron station 16 bucks large size, get concentrate only.
RP -20 ounces around 16 bucks

I try and find the best deal gas is so expensive, I think it is a good investment.

Amsoil PI is $9.80/12 oz bottle if you have a dealer near you. I order it by the case of 12-12 oz bottles for $111.97 free shipping. I use it in the middle and last tank before end of OCI. For my Ram, that's at 5k and 10K-ish mi.

Even though Amsoil has a smidge more PEA I haven't been able to find anything that says it's an UCL. Am I missing something?

That's because it's not an UCL. I've never been a believer in UCLs for FI engines. There are a million different arguments and studies out there leaning both ways. I just tend to lean toward the belief that it gives carbon deposits something to stick to and can add to more deposits sticking than without. There may be a magical ratio that could do some good long term, but knowing what that is is a crapshoot at best. I want my UCs dry and clean as a whistle.
