Just got my 2010 1500 3 weeks ago after selling my cummins. So Iv now made the move from cumminsforum to here. All in all I love the truck but want to know what other people are getting for mpg? I do a lot of eway driving and am only averaging 14mpg (computer and hand calculate) with the cruise set around 74mph. I know its a truck but expected it to be a bit better then that. Also put the Vararam intake on and have not seen any increase. If anything it may have gone down a little. Truck is a 2010 crew cab sport with 45,000 miles. 275/65/20 nitto terra grapplers on SRT10 replica wheels. Also have a hard tonneau and the intake system. Tires currently are at 40psi and rpm's sit around 1850 give or take at 74mph. Let me know what you guys are getting? If this is normal? Anything others have had luck with? Thanks

Getting an average of 15, that's about half highway half city. I can get up to 20 tho if I'm cruising at65 on the highway. it's got the 5.7 with a 2.5 level and 33's

What the gearing?

3.92's and 75 mph don't mix well.

3.21's and 70 do wonders

3.92's and 70 are in between.

Unless you have the 3.55's and 70 will do ok too.....how heavy of a foot means a lot too

Not sure what gears are in it at the moment but it cruses around 1850rpm at 74. I live 2 miles from the eway and my work is 1 mile off the exit. 82 miles round trip in Michigan with relatively level roads.

i have a 2013 QC 4x4 hemi with 3.55s and am averaging about 18 MPG with about 70% highway driving. mine is all stock and i set my cruise at about 70 but occasionally will hit 80 or so

another thing that is hurting you is the short commute. your engine never gets to temp so it is running in closed loop (or open loop, don't remember anymore...lol), which is richer, like having the choke on. when i had my 07 4.7 i worked 2 miles from home and was getting about 6 mpg driving back and forth but when i started a different job further away i was getting about 14.

My commute is 41 miles 1 way. The low numbers you read were distance to and from the eway. The 13 also has a 6 speed to help but from what Iv seen others reporting mine is really low.

sorry. somehow i thought you said you had a 1 mile commute? but yes, the 13 tranny will help a little. but i think it would be about 14 in town and about 18 highway. my son has a 2009 and he got about 18 on a 4 hour highway trip with 4 guys and a bunch of gear in the back doing about 80. not sure what gears but its an outdoorsman with a hemi QC 4x4.

any idea when the last tune up was done? and 74mph is a little high when trying to get max MPG...lol

My 13 4x4 crew with 3.55 6 speed 275/65/20. leveled gets about 13 combined MPG.I have found that keeping it at or below 70mph helps the mpg.

I've getting 20 with majority highway miles...I have the quad cab short bed with Hemi, no mods, cruise in the 70-72 area normally. I have the 3.55 gears and at 75mph I'm pretty much right at 2k rpm, so I imagine you have the 3.21's if you're sitting a good bit shy of 2k rpms at 74mph.

With 45,000 miles I doubt the truck has had a tune up done. Maybe some plugs would help but normally they are good for 100k. I'm courius about putting a wide band o2 on and see how rich it's running. With all the new air the intake is bringing the computer may just be dumping fuel at it.

HI OP,
There is a significant difference in the mileage of a 2010 to a 2013. What you are saying is not unreasonable for the truck you have. Also what exactly are premium offroad accessories? Plus your tires are about 34" diameter, the stockers are about 32 IIRC.
All this affects mileage also.

The OP has a 2010....his copper plugs should be replaced at 30,000 i do believe.

Wheel and tire combo isn't helping matters. Unsprung weight and MPG don't go together, same with soft compound tires. Also, are the tires factory size? If not has the computer been adjusted for the diff? if not your odometer is off, messing up the calculations.

There isn't a huge difference between a 10 and 13 between two 6 speed truck. Sure they went to a electric power steering but that was good for 5 hp. I doubt it would account for a 2 or 3 mpg difference. I would guess the big loss is the tires, I would doubt the speedometer is corrected which will lose a decent chunk of mpg.

My 14 hemi 3.92 gear commute I get somewhere in the 17 range. This weekend did a trip 114 miles one way and got 19.1 there and 20.1 for the round trip. The bed was full of camping gear too. Not shabby IMO

my 14 Hemi has a lifetime (4000 miles) average of 19.4 and with a 6000 mile journey I will end up at 25 mpgs for the whole trip

I do know the tire size will not help however others are running the same and getting much better numbers. The tire size is only one over stock and at 70mph is about 72.3. No the computer has not been re caled for the tire yet but the 14 mpg I'm claiming was before I just put the new tires on anyway. I think I may have found the problem in that the clutch fan is always on creating constant drag on the motor. Anyone have knowledge of the V6 electric fan conversion? Do I have to get a programmer as well to set the temp points or just plug and play?

OP...How cold was it when you did you test? If your in Michigan and you did your calcs when it was 10 below outside, then I am not surprised at the 14mpg.

The Nittos and 74 mph ain't helping. At 65mph on stock BADYEARS with a 3.55 diff and no changes to suspension I can get just over 20mpg.
Pure city I average about 12.8 mpg.

The suggestion to check your plugs is a good one. Also you may want to consider the ole catch can--recirculating oil form your PCV can cause the computer to pull timing to prevent pre-ignition (knock). 40K miles without a catch can means you may need to consider seafoam too.

I've never had it happen on a personal vehicle. I'm a UPS Feeder driver. I've had the fan lock up on a (road) tractor before. You wouldn't think that would make much of a difference, especially on a big ol diesel. It makes a very noticeable difference! Get that fixed.

Get new plugs. Run a couple of bottles of fuel injector cleaner, to be on the safe side. Leave for work a little earlier, and slow down. I guarentee that will help.

I have no clue how any truck this size, regardless of gears, tranny, engine, or gas or diesel, can get over 20 mpg at 75 mph. Mine needs to be 64mph or slower to get 20, and the wind had better not be blowing any direction except directly behind. Lie-o-meter on the dash doesn't count.
