So December 23rd 2016 I bought a brand new 2017 Ram 3500 Dually. A few months later at about 3500 miles I went outside to start my truck and had 0 oil PSI. I turn the truck off waited a minute and then restart the truck, again with 0 oil PSI. I live on an incline so I was unable to check the oil but when I backed up into the street the oil pressure went back to normal.

After I got to work I checked the oil and there was 0 oil on the dipstick. I called the dealer and told them what was going on and they told me to bring it up and they would look at it. They checked it and it was one gallon of oil low, they drained all the oil replace it and put a new oil filter on checked it for leeks (none found) they told me to come back in 1000 miles.

So after 1500 miles I brought it back in for them to check this time it was 3 quarts low. The service associate told me the oil consumption was too high and thinks that I need a new motor. But Chrysler doesn't recommend in their tech manual to service or repair the motor until 7500 miles. They told me to check the engine oil every 1000 miles until I reach 7500 miles and then bring it back. If at any point I check it and it was low to bring it back in they will fill it and document the level of the oil.

Needless to say this sucks big time this is not a problem I should be having. With spring spring / summer here we have started camping and traveling. If they have to replace the motor in my truck how long can I expect the dealer to have it for repairs.

What motor do you have?!! That's an insane amount of oil to be burning. Also I'd be concerned with everything after the engine with that much oil consumption. I'd get with ram cares on here asap

Yea Id be concerned with everything after the engine, so turbo, cats, dpf etc. Ram Cares is a customer relations person who will follow up with your dealer to make sure everything is done and being taken care of properly. I know they say some oil consumption is normal but damn thats a **** ton of oil.

I have been working nights and am going to call the dealer tomorrow or go up there, the more I think about this the more it concerns and bothers me.

Just keep in mind this isn't something that's a common occurrence. Sucks and I'd be pissed to but out of the thousands of engines made there's bound to be some ones with issues. Not an excuse just putting things in perspective. Has to be frustrating but have to let them do their job and replace the engine

Just to update at 6k miles it was about another gallon low Service manager kept the truck and started a repair case with Ram. They did a leak down test showing significant leak down in 2 cylinders (5 & 6) as well as loss of compression. they then pulled the head off and found that 2 valves for the #5 cylinder were not fully seating. At this point Ram sent the dealer a new motor to be installed. Total time was 5 weeks from the time I last dropped it off until they fixed the truck.

Glad you got this issue being taken care of.
It totally sticks that it happened!
Did they supply you with a loner truck?

One more reason I am so terrified to trade mine in for another! Mine now works flawlessly.
But a 6.7L CTD would make things worry free!
If I chose the right one!

Good luck with your future 6.7L CTD...
They are amazing trucks when they perform as expected!

This is insane, although when you said how much oil was missing I knew what the issue was. Did they give you a loaner while they worked on it?

Yes they did give me a loaner it was a 1500 that was unable to tow anything I have (**** it didn't even have a hitch receiver but I can guess why). I had a suspicion of where the oil might be going but wasn't exactly sure why, I thought their might be some scoring of the cylinder wall but they never went into that they stopped once the found the valves not seating. #4 cylinder had 10% leak down, #5 had around 65% leak down, & #6 cylinder had 25% leak down with all 3 cylinders in the mid to low 300's for compression. Also SyN their are a ton of people I work with (over 15) that drive 3500, 2500 & couple 1500 and they have had them for years with no problems. I can't say that Ram & the dealership handled this the way I wanted or expected them to but in the end I got what I wanted and they did everything to that truck at no cost to me.
