To start off, my truck is a 2015 CC 1500 4x4 with Hemi 5.7. I finished yesterday a weekend trip from Houston to Georgia coast and back for my sons graduation from Navy MT school, which came to be a 1900 mile trip with travel and sight seeing. My truck is stock, factory wheels, Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 synthetic, hood deflector, and flaps. Below is what I got for MPG at 17 octane:

Kroger - 515 miles 25.5 gal @ 20.2 MPG
Texaco - 452 miles 25.5 gal @ 17.7 MPG
Shell - 446 miles 25. gal @ 17.8 MPG
Chevron - 488 miles 27. gal @ 18.1 MPG

I run 41 PSI in tires cold which settles at 43-44 PSI at highway speeds between 65-75 MPH, which is what I set the cruise to. The first tank was using mostly defrosters only, the second tank (first fill up) was vents only, 3rd tank was air conditioning, and last was air conditioning and defrosters (rain and wind).

The average is 18.45 MPG, my truck shows 18.1 as the average. My sticker says 15 / 21 MPG with a average of 17 MPG.

I don't have a question in all of this. I think these are great statistics for a 4x4 truck. It does bring the question to mind of the quality of gasoline for the price. Kroger's price was 1.69/gal in Houston, The rest were 1.99/gal with Shell being in the Georgia coast.

Happy travels and Holidays all!! :favorites13:

It could have something to do with different amounts of corn liquor that is added to the gas in each state.

This signature is AWESOME!!!

Those numbers are about what I have gotten on a few longer trips with 8 speed 3.21 rear.

As what was posted above....
Do the gas stations that you used run 10% ethanol in their gas?

I think it has to do with how much ethanol is in the gas. I live in the RGV and we made a trip to GA in November 2015 CC with 5.7 hemi. I averaged my best from Houston into Louisiana with 21mpg. It dropped to 19 then back to 20. On the way back home I had the same results but driving faster it dropped to 17mpg for the low and 20 mph for the high.

I think it has more to do with the direction and speed of prevalent winds.

Yes, the stations I filled up at said a maximum of 10% ethanol. I did notice the Eco light (MDS) indicator was on most of the time from Houston thru Louisiana and Mississippi. Then not so much for the rest of the trip. More wind on the return side of trip also.

I have the same truck and I was getting 15.5 MPG around town with an 8 speed 392 rear. I put a 2.5 leveling kit on it and now I am getting 14.5 around town. I hope I get 17-19 on a trip. I can live with that.

Speed is going to be a huge player in MPG, then the ethanol content, and octane.

Try it at 55 mph and watch those mpgs go up!

Using cruise control will give you a decent increase in mpg as well.

I've driven Portland Oregon to Bismarck north Dakota several times. I was getting 18 mpg with my 91 octane hemifever tune. Now that I turned off mds with my,91 hemifever tune I get 21-22mpg.

That's with going a pretty steady 80 MPH and going through the rockies.

Jerry1984 - I have the 8 speed (8HP70) and 3.21 gears. It has the towing package, which I haven't towed with it yet. At some point my plan is to acquire a medium travel trailer, probably a travel lite or something. That is quite a ways out at this point.

That just doesn't make sense to me unless the activation/de-activation of MDS uses up fuel.

I didn't believe it either when people were saying turning mds off was getting better mileage on here. It's true though. I think it has to do with the RPM range it runs in when it's on 4 cylinder mode. That's my only guess. It didn't help my intown mileage but my long highway runs it gained me 3mpg over the last 2 1500 mile drives

You'll love the 8 speed for towing when it comes time. I'm never short on power and always seems to know the correct gear. I do have 3.92 but you'll be just fine with the 3.21!!

I would veer towards these MPG tests weren't performed in a controlled environment. I averaged 21.8 MPG @ 67-68 MPH on a 600 mile round trip, 95% highway. My truck is all stock (performance wise), tires at 40psi cold, and very heavy. Everybody will report slightly different results, as none of these tests will be performed in a controlled environment. Which honestly, doesn't matter. Do whatever works best for you.

Those are respectable numbers for a Hemi I presume.

Obviously not a controlled environment but I take the same path, 80 MPH cruise control except through the rockies, run the same fuel,,make the same stops every trip. 4 trips with mds on I averaged 18.5 mpg. 2 trips with mds off 21.5 mpg. I'll keep my mds off

Could depend on whether the other states have already shifted to winter blends.

On a trip last month from San Antonio to New Orleans, I got about 18 mpg average doing 65 - 75 mph. I flirted with 19.2 for a few miles, but it didn't last. My lowest was coming back at about 17 mph, but I had a good headwind.

I can't complain one bit having 295/60r20s. I aired up the tires were to 40 psi cold the night before. In the morning they were at 37 psi (it was in the 50's when we started). On the road they showed 39 to 41 psi (it was a lot warmer weather on the way back). 5.7L, 8 spd, and leveled.

Around town I average 14 - 15 mpg and flirt with 16 every so often. Can't complain. That's what I was getting in my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with it's weak 3.8L V6.
