I'm currently getting all my supplies to get my 60k mile maintenance out the way. One of which is a coolant flush and replacement. I contacted Valvoline regarding the correct coolant to use.

This is what I got:
For the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Liter Hemi, we recommend the use of the Zerex G-05. *This product is a Hybrid Organic Additive Technology (HOAT) coolant that was designed to be used in the*2002-2012*Chrysler applications. *This product will be yellow in color unlike the factory coolant we produce for Chrysler that it Orange however, it will mix with the existing coolant in the system without any issues.*

But I also read this:
5.7L Engine 1500 Models

MOPAR® Antifreeze/Coolant 10 Year/150,000 Mile Formula OAT (Organic Additive Technology) or equivalent.

16 Quarts (15 Liters)

CAUTION!
Mixing of engine coolant (antifreeze) other than specified Organic Additive Technology (OAT) engine coolant (antifreeze), may result in engine damage and may decrease corrosion protection. Organic Additive Technology (OAT) engine coolant is different and should not be mixed with Hybrid Organic Additive Technology (HOAT) engine coolant (antifreeze) or any “globally compatible” coolant (antifreeze). If a non-OAT engine coolant (antifreeze) is introduced into the cooling system in an emergency, it should be flushed with OAT coolant and replaced with the specified OAT engine coolant (antifreeze) as soon as possible.

Do not use water alone or alcohol-based engine coolant (antifreeze) products. Do not use additional rust inhibitors or antirust products, as they may not be compatible with the radiator engine coolant and may plug the radiator.

This vehicle has not been designed for use with propylene glycol-based engine coolant (antifreeze). Use of propylene glycol-based engine coolant (antifreeze) is not recommended.

So WTF am I going to use? I used Zerex G-05 in my '02 Ram 1500 3.7

From what I've read before the Zerex G-05 is the same as the Mopar. I topped my coolant off with Zerex when I installed my new thermostat.

Your truck comes with factory Mopar coolant which is a HOAT coolant, I don't know where you found that last quoted section but it's wrong, or at least it's missing some important information. The red HOAT coolant has been used in all Mopars since 1999 IIRC and Chrysler changed its coolant in the vehicles to OAT in 2013. If you are absolutely paranoid then flush the system entierly with running water and add whichever coolant you want because you won't be mixing them at that point. The new OAT formula from Mopar is dyed purple vs the red of the HOAT just so you don't confuse the two.

The info was from the RAM TOOLBOX app. You're right though. I did further research and realized the app is for 13-14 RAM's. I'm gonna get 4 gallons of Zerex G-05 from Napa. And since the truck is barely broke in, I won't buy any flush solution. Just drain, chase old coolant out with a gallon or two of distilled water and replace with the G -05.

Thx charonblk07

Do you happen to know how many gallons our trucks take? Thanks for the info Btw. I've had the mixed coolant in there for about 2k miles.

Edit: are there any none mopar options?

approx 4 gallons of the 50/50 blend so 2 jugs of concentrate does it normally, and there are a few OAT brands out there: Peak Global LifeTime or Turbo Power from Recochem. And as a tip in the future, just top off with distilled water, if you're losing enough coolant that you need to top off with more coolant then you have a problem for the dealership to look at under warranty.

Thanks for the info. I just got home from the dealer. The parts guy initially gave me the old HOAT coolant, I had to point out to him that it's a different coolant. They only had 50/50 of the new coolant so I got hit for almost $140 with tax. Live and learn I guess.

Sad when we know more about our vehicles than the guys at the dealerships. I go through stuff like this all the time when I have to walk into a dealership, but I'm more informed than the average customer. FYI you can find the Mopar OAT concentrate coolant online for around $40 shipped (Amazon) so it's a lot less than the $50-70 that some dealerships are charging for the 50/50.

Yea more often than not we know more than they do. I paid $32 each gallon of the 50/50, I figured it be cheaper on amazon but I wanted to get the right coolant in there ASAP. I plan on doing it tomorrow morning.

Do you have a part number or direct link to the OAT coolant you are using? Mine is a 2014 also and want to make sure I get the right stuff.

The Canadian number I have is 68175338AA and I believe the American numbers are 68163848AA for the concentrate and 68163849AA for the 50/50. Amazon has a 4-pack for $118 so it's $30/gallon for the concentrate.

Oreillys has it too. That's where I got it when I did my t-stat swap.

I don't have the part number right now but the best way to tell them apart is the pre 2013 says 5 years/100,000 miles and new one says 10 years/150,000 miles

Thank you! Used the American part numbers on Amazon for the 4-packs as you said.

For others reading, here is what the owners manual for the 2014 Ram says....

5.7L Engine – 1500 Models (We recommend you use MOPAR® Antifreeze/ Coolant 10 Year/150,000 Mile Formula that meets the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-12106.)

The part numbers provided meets the MS-12106 standard and has the 10 yr/150k mile life span as noted in the manual. Some of the others I've looked at does not have these markings.

Also, I might add the manual shows the 3.6 and 2500/3500 with the 5.7 as the same coolant but they have different volume requirements as noted below:

3.6 V6 = 14 Quarts (13 Liters)
5.7 V8 (1500) = 16 Quarts (15 Liters)
5.7 V8 (2500/3500) = 18.7 Quarts (17.7 Liters)

Again....thank you! :favorites13:

Antifreeze/Coolant Zerex GO5 - Engine Coolant/Anti-Freeze | O'Reilly Auto Parts

No Oreillys in S. Fla bud.

I ordered a case off Amazon for $48.44

Looks to me like the Zerex G05 is for the 2013 and older models based on some of the above information, correct?
