At how many miles did you start using synthetic oil? I'm sitting at 62k right now and am thinking of going that direction.

I run regular oil in the summer and synthetic in the winter so the motor primes faster in the cold. Motor still running great at 250,000

I've used Mobil 1 in my JD garden tractor since day one!! :roflsquared:

If you have a farm & barn store near you that sells Citgo Synthetic, sometimes it goes on sale around here for like $2.70 a qt. That's not much more than regular oil. That's what I use. 150k mi on my truck. I know the previous owner used synthetic (I found receipts), not sure if they 'always' used it. I'd say it's never too late to start, but just for relevance, our Jeep G/C with a 4.7 has over 200k on conventional oil changed at 5000 mi intervals, doesn't burn any. My other truck has 270k doesn't burn any. I've run several vehicles well over 200k and a few close to 300k on regular Citgo oil that I've used since the 80's (not the 'same' oil ...I buy new jugs now and then!). Never had an engine puke yet burn significant oil.

You could go longer on synthetic between changes so it'll probably cost about the same as conventional when you figure the longer interval. Do you change your own oil? How many yrs do you think you'll hang onto your truck?

I have the 5.7. I plan on keeping it at least 10 more years. Probably switch over at the next interval.

Summer usually in the 15C to 35C range. Winter usually between -10C and -30C. 2011 ram 1500 with hemi and 3.92 gears. My 2017 is still sitting in the garage. Might start using it in the spring.

Just did the first oil change at 3050 miles. Put in Quaker State Ultimate Durability Full Synthetic. Used a Fram Ultra filter, what a PIA. They have that damn thing right above the power steering and frame cross member, BAD design. I wrapped the power steering and frame with plastic to keep it clean and give the oil something to flow around into the pan. The Fram Ultra got good reviews but I don't like that none of my oil filter sockets fit tightly. I managed to get 3/4 turns once the gasket touched (says 3/4 to 1 turn on filter) but I found with my Jeep GC that you best get 1 full turn or it may leak. I like to use the cap sockets and go 1 exact turn, hopefully hand tight will do. No leaks after a short drive. I feel better going through the winter with synthetic versus the synthetic blend they use from the factory.

I put a line on my filter with a sharpie so once it touches I can see that I gave it a full turn. I've had a couple leak so now I make sure. I can usually get 1 full turn with just my hand as long as I kept the new filter somewhere warm before I changed it. It is a bad design for making a mess though. I wipe it up best I can and then use brake cleaner to get rid of the rest.
