I just bought a 2012 Ram 1500 with the HEMI and was wondering if there is a way to tell when the MDS is 4 cylinder mode. As I understand it, the ECO symbol is nothing more than an indicator of light throttle and has no ties to the MDS. I'm switching over from a Chevy that had a indicator that let you know if you are in V4 or V8 mode, and I really liked knowing what the motor was doing.

If you're cruising on a fairly level ground the engine will make a sound like its bogging down. It shuts on and off all the time that's why I turned mine off with my superchips

no tuner for the 2012's. You will here a change of noise in the engine. slightly buzzy if thats the way to explain it.

Is there no way to turn off the MDS on the 2012's? I don't really like the lagging feeling it gives me.

Who told you that?

When it goes into ECO mode, that's the MDS kicking in. When you see that ECO indicator light, that's the MDS. You can also hear the difference like the others have said.

Right now there is no permanent way, but I believe if you put it in tow/haul mode the mds won't turn on

Push the shift up or down arrows on the gear shift to put it in manual mode and it turns the mds off as well.

to add to this, when im in ECO in low speeds, the exhaust has a 4cylinder drone to it. also when u manualy shift (arrow up or down) or put it into tow haul the ECO will shut off no matter what rpm you are at. I think the ECO is the MDS. thats my opinion

Downsides to putting it in Tow/Haul mode, or using the shift arrows though, are you also lose O/D I believe jsut based on the way the RPM's change at highway speeds when you engage either of those two modes.

Correct and on 09 like mine it says FUEL SAVER instead.

Correct

Push the shift up or down arrows on the gear shift to put it in manual mode and it turns the mds off as well.
Preferred way IMO since it does not think you are towing then.

My 09 has never said fuel saver? where does this come on at?

When in park with key in on or run go into evic settings or setup and towards the bottom you can choose wether you want it to display "fuel saver" check if you want it uncheck if you don't. Don't have evic? Then you have to go to dealer and they can.

This is an old thread, but in the 2015's is there any visual alert in the EVIC that says that MDS is on? I've noticed the droning noise at times but I'm not always sure.

I've noticed ECO at the top center of the EVIC when I'm not on the gas or going downhill. I think that may be the indicator but I'm not 100% sure.. my Jeep has something similar that shows up if I'm on the right display.. but no MDS on the pentastar (that I"m aware of?)
