What's up everyone, long time viewer first time posting. Question is I have a 2012 1500 with the 5.7 hemi with 42k miles. I'm having some work done on it and the mechanic tells me to never ever put synthetic oil in those hemis. Says to always stick to traditional and dodge even recommends it. This just seems horribly off to me and I was wondering if anyone has received any similar advice. Was thinking of switching over to synthetic on my next oil change because the truck pulls our camper and definitely gets a work out. Is this guy crazy?

You should ask him specifically why not. It would be interesting to hear if he has anything even remotely scientific in his answer. synthetic or regular, if it meets the basic requirements set by RAM and replaced within the proper timeframes just do what makes you comfortable and yes, as others have said think about if the mechanic is the proper person to provide you with suggestions.

I'd be finding another mechanic..

I agree. It always makes me very nervous when I hear a dealership technician say something that I know to be very untrue. I instantly do not want them touching my truck.

I understand that a Outboard engine is not a RAM engine,
but for your information:
My Suzuki 300HP manual states to NOT USE synthetic oils before 200 hours.
The reason for that seems to be that the increased lubrification properties of some synthetic oils will lead to a incomplete/longer break-in time as the 10 hours suggested.

Outboard engines are usually used for hours and hours at 4500 - 5500 rpm, but run rather cool at 145-150° fahrenheit due their fresh water cooling.

I had also issues with two of my old pickups and synthetic oils as both of them started to leak and the low oil pressure warning came on.

That is probably what your mechanic got confused with, but i don't see why you should not use the right weight and quality synthetic oil at 42K miles.

First post, I smell a troll.
No mechanic, even one with a room temperature IQ, would not say what he said he said.

once you get a RAM and on this site you check it often. Its been over 4 hours...

I had bad experience with my 2005 Jeep that had the 5.7 hemi. I used synthetic since day one of purchase but after 4 years i had terrible knocking from the engine and the Chrysler mechanic informed me it was due to synthetic. These engines were build to use the same kind of oil that were designed for.
I am sticking with what the manual says IMO
