2017 Ram Rebel 5.7L 4x4. Lets do an oil change at 2000 miles to get factory oil out and good oil in. Easy right? I thought so since I have done hundreds of oil changes in my 50 years.

I crawl under and search for oil filter. WTF? Who stuck it THERE?!!! This is going to be fun ONLY ONCE, because I am doing a remote oil filter on this truck for sure.

An hour later this is the filter. I always win. Does RAM have gorillas working in the factory?

With oil drained and filter finally removed I get ready to install my relocation kit. Most kits include 90 degree connectors on each piece. I didn't want that nor were hoses able to be routed on the Ram with 90's so I pieced together my own kit using Perma Cool parts. All made in USA. The single filter mount allows larger, better filters.

3798 spin on adapter M22x1.5
1711 single filter mount 3/4" x 16 filters (K&N HP-3001 or equivalent)
15156 brass 1/2" barb fittings (2 packs)
131 hose 1/2" x 5 feet
14008 hose clamps (1 pack)

Awesome. I gotta get the relocation kit (although I didn't have gorilla torque on my oil filter and I use the ziplock bag method). Your fumoto looks good. I unfortunately found out I have a crossthread issue and only my factory plug works (as I stripped the fumoto). So I need to beg/borrow/steal a 14mm Tap as my set goes up to 12. LOL.

First oil change on all my new trucks was always done by the dealer for that very reason. They must torque that damn filter at a couple hundreds pounds!!!!!

I thought about letting dealer change it first but doubted they would protect and clean up as good as I did. I didn't want a mess all over my electric power steering. I also wanted to install remote filter right away.

By comparison, the oil drain plug was barely tight. I was expecting gorilla torque on it but there was none.

My oil filter looked just like after the dealer changed my oil last time. I also had to engine degrease under my truck because they don't care if the leftover residue drips oil on my garage floor.

I left feedback with ram care.

I have good luck with dealer oil/filter changes. Never any oil drops on my garage floor and I bring in my PP and Fram Ultra filter and they change it for around $14. Plus I have a record with them that the oil was changed.

That alone is worth the $$$!

BTW - changed my oil a few weeks ago for the first time.
No problem whatsoever getting the old filter off. Didn’t even need a tool for it, just grabbed it with both hands and it turned. Guess I was pretty lucky seeing the pictures the OP uploaded.
Used a quart Zip-Lock bag around the filter and spilled not a single drop of oil in the process.
I agree, the positioning of the filter could be better, but it’s still easy to access. I’ve definitely seen worse!

Bring your truck to my dealer and see how clean it comes back. :roflsquared:

I do my own service, documenting part numbers of filter and oil type used. I too have a record of service.

I don't know about your 2013 but my 2017 you can only get one hand on the oil filter. The electric power steering pump is directly below filter on top of the rack. There is less then an 1 inch clearance between filter and pump.
Unless you are Superman, you wouldn't have got my factory installed filter off by hand.

Nice write up, and oh yeah the dreaded factory tightened oil filter rises again.

Out here in the country, we don't worry about spilled oil on our dirt road much. If I didn't have such good uses for old oil, I wouldn't bother putting a pan under the oil change, lol.

I know at the dealership I work at I always get the Rams for that reason but I always make sure to clean the trucks when I'm done. Never had a customer complain about oil dripping off their truck.

I know this is old, but was there a reason you made your own version for 50% more cost than other kits?

Nice! I like the idea. I may have to do this. I haven't done an oil change in my 1500 yet, I am sure it has to be easier than my 2500 CTD was..

One thing I wanted to note, the factory oil it actually top notch oil. Engineers tested all sorts of oils to be used with the Hemi and Penz is the best they found. Especially when it comes to that Hemi tick!
