Since I run a 170* T-stat and my engine stays around 185 what would be a good weight oil to use? I figure since I am running at a cooler temperature the oil is staying thinner. I could be wrong. Should I switch to say 10w20? Like I said my thinking could be wrong on this.

If my truck never gets to 200* then the oil dosnt act like the 20 weight. At what temperature would the oil act as a 20 weight? I am thinking that since the oil never reaches temperature that I am driving around with say a 5 weight. Can I be wrong? Probably. I hope I am explaining this right.

Running a cooler temperature means the oil is thicker, not thinner. I am no expert and have not researched this, but IF ANYthing, you would want a lighter oil, not heavier. And it's the second number that matters in that regard, as that is the "hot" value. Search "multi viscosity oil" for more info.

You should stay with the manufacturer recommended 5W - 20 , especially running cooler.

You're talking about a coolant thermostat, you're saying your engine oil stays at 185?

Also, no, oil doesn't act like you think, and the answer would be quite complicated even if your oil temp was 185, which I doubt.

Oil gets barely to 190. If I push it it gets 195 tops but cools back down when the fan kicks in

Most would agree that oil temps between 170ish-220ish is fine for most oil. I think you're kinda worrying about nothing.

Yup: Stay with 5W-20 ... If you live where it gets dang right cold most of the time & your Ram Lives outside most of the time {Not in a Garage}? You might consider a 0W-20 --> Uses a more stout base oil! All 0W-20 oils are synthetic...

Me personally--> I want my oil to get to 190-220 as quick as possible & every time I drive my 5.7L... Due to I want all the moisture & carbon contaminants & any fuel {that has slipped down past the pistons}= [Fuel Dilution] to be either cooked or evaporated out of the oil... {Every Time I drive}!
