Hello People,

I am have overheating issues with my 2013 ram 1500 4.7 6 speed transmission. At first it started in a parking lot with whoosh noise coming from the fan clutch area. It started overheating to the point it almost reached 3/4 on dial. Have changed about everything and have spent over 400 at the dealership for diagnostics.

Parts that have been changed:
fan clutch
Water pump
Radiator
Thermostat
Electric fan
Dealer put in their coolant.
All Spark plugs changed and some coils due to a miss fire code that does not come no more.

Drove it this morning after electric fan had been put in and still overheats. It will get to 221 f and tranny will get past 180 f. I have another of the same exact ram, and under the same conditions engine will get to 212 at most and tranny at 158.

I had the tranny fluid and filters changed.

I don't want to go to the dealership anymore has they have been nothing but a pain; not fixing anything, keeping the truck for long periods of time, and charging me up the ass.

I would appreciate any suggestion or ideas. Thank you very much

You've replaced everything that would cause this, maybe put a 180 thermostat in?

check and see if they used the correct coolant. wouldn't be unheard of for a new thermostat to defective right out of the box. could also check the pulleys and make sure they are spinning as designed, esp the water pump pulley. also start with the simplest check. make sure the proper amount amount of coolant was added.

Easily over looked is the radiator cap. No kidding, if they didn't replace it when they replaced radiator it may have prolonged your pain.

Its spring loaded to release pressure in an over heat, and getting to 221 F shows your system is holding some pressure, but if the cap were simmering you could be loosing pressure containment in turn allowing your coolant to flash off.

Worth looking anyway.

This.

When you have the cap off I would run it and make sure all the air is burped out of the system too. Park on a hill or ramps nose up. Burping the air out takes time and I have seen more than one tech shove it out the door without properly burping the system in hopes the air will work itself out.

I checked the coolant and they didn't perform a flush like they said. Have already flushed it out.
In the beginning i didn't know what type of coolant so I put in hoat. Didn't drive it for that long when I took on to the dealer. They blamed it on me and said they would flush and add the proper coolant for 260. Now that I flushed it I found it mixed.13de0069fd0b7465208f7a09ec0a461b.jpg

That looks dirty as ****, didn't they already"flush" it, I would ask for my money back and do the flush your self buy the correct coolant while your at the dealer.

221 is considered normal ops on a 3.6 is that not the case for the V-8's? What was your normal operational temperature before the "overheating"?

Thanks everyone your advice. Flushed the coolant and switched out the new thermostat. Engine is running cool again.
Now the only thing is my tranny is running much hotter than my other 2013 ram. About 40 degrees more.
I already changed the filters and changed the oil. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What is your before and after normal operational temp? Did you put in a lower degree thermostat? As I said for some engines 220 is normal ops

No I put in a 195 duralast. Engine is running below 212. Like my other one. The tranny would get up to 170 with out trailer. Now it is getting up 195. Probably would go hire if I let it. I don't feel any slips

Sounds like The flush helped assuming the coolant was as dirty as the one you showed us in a picture earlier. With that said perhaps your engine runs a little cooler in general than my 3.6

I bet your tranny cooler is plug. If the coolant was as dirty as it was, when you flushed it it probably caused grime to be released and turned to mud and plugged the cooler.

Try flushing it again with chemicals (flush cleaner) motorcraft makes a good one... If it doesn't fix it I would try replacing the trans cooler.
