It seems finding a performance torque converter for our 8HP70 8-speed transmissions is no easy task. In fact, the only one I have found out there so far is this one, but it is ridiculously expensive...

SHR 8HP70 Torque converter by ProTorque

...So, has anyone found a good reasonably priced performance torque converter in the 2600RPM-3000RPM stall range for the 8HP70?

Thanks

Yea I just sent emails out to about 10 of the top performance TC companies and Chris was one of them. I'll report back once they all respond to see who makes them and the best price.

Thad is running an edge I believe. Matt can elaborate on this.

Maybe I'm a little jaded from working at a performance shop but $950 does not seem that expense to me at all?

Really? In the past most of the ones I have bought for street applications have been in the $400s range; I hope there is some cheaper ones out there anyways. So far, I have received a few responses from some of those companies I emailed and none have a TC for the 8 speed. I'll wait to hear from some of the other ones before spending that much for one.

Its so expensive because there is no cores for them to buy real cheap. So if theyre paying top dollar then youre paying top doallar.

Odd considering that this transmission has been out there for like 4 years; you think more companies would be making TCs for them by now.

Like I said in the other thread, there are not any 8sp converters available that are worth your time right now. Circle D has 1 out there, but that truck only knocked a few hundreths of its 60' time.

Edge has 1 in a 2014 8sp that dropped almost a tenth of the 60', but did not gain anything from there.

This will be a different story once trans tuning is available, but until then, I would sit back and just wait on the converter.

$950 is on Par for a Billet Converter. Figure the bulletproof 4L80E and the Duramax and Cummins Billet converters go for that much.

AFE, ATS and Banks units are all over $1000 each.

Looks like I can get a 2800RPM stall from Circle D for about $500, which is about what I would expect to pay; the higher stalls are about $1000 though. Even if it is a just little gain in acceleration, it would be worth it at that price since I don't think I would need more than 2800RPM stall on this.

Yea, I really wish there some tuning options out there for these transmissions, but we'll have to wait on that I guess. At least if I did get a TC upgrade now I would be ready to take full advantage of it when the tuning ability does become available ;)

My best 60 before the Circle D converter was 1.84 and 1.75 after...

Thads best before was a 1.79 and a 1.72 after.

Just wanted the facts out in the open, a few hundreths is wrong.

Jay

Just making sure we are on the same page. I didnt think you saw a 1.7 60' until you added heads, cam, ported intake, longtube headers, 3.55 gears, QA1 shocks, and front runners.

Thad went from consistent 1.80-1.82 (ran a 1.79 once or twice) down to 1.72-1.74 with the converter being the only change. I may be wrong, but I thought you changed quite a bit more than just a converter to get that 1.75 60' from the mid 1.8's you were cutting with the stock converter.

Really doesnt matter though...$1000-$1500 for a tq converter that doesnt even knock a tenth off a persons 1/4 mile time isnt worth the money unless you are desperately chasing every last hundredth. In this guys case who is not racing his truck, especially at 5000' elevation, any converter on the market would be a waste of time.

Yes. So the Tq converter, ported heads, ported intake, bigger cam, longtube headers, and front runners knocked .1 off your 60' time. I just wanted to make sure my facts were not wrong.

Believe me, I'm not trying to knock you, Circle D, or Edge...I'm just not sold on the performance of any of the 8sp converters yet either until we can tune the transmission.

How much do you feel you gained in the 60' from the converter alone?

The way your message reads it sounds like you added the cam and TC at the same time and went from best 1.84 to best 1.82. And you are attributing both tenths to the TC??

Do we really need to debate what caused 60' drops on eachothers trucks? I mean damn matt you only had to install 20 different converters in your truck and drop a bunch more weight to get yours to run. Either edge doesnt know enough to get it right the first several times or your cam/tuning needs work.

Imo 8spd need trans tuning more than they need a higher stall.

HAHA...you're funny. My truck cut a 1.72 the very first time it saw a track, and a 1.66 the 2nd time it saw a track. I have the single fastest N/A and nitrous 5.7 hemi truck ever documented and the fastest N/A 60' time anyone has put down in a hemi truck regardless of the size of the motor. I'd say everything in this truck is working perfectly fine.

The truck has seen 3 converters. 1 that cut a 1.64 with the stock heads and cam at 4500lbs. The 2nd was a flop because Edge didnt have paperwork on the first one they built me. I didnt want to wait to send mine in first for them to cut open and see if there was room for improvement, so they took a guess and sent me what they thought was more aggressive...it actually turned out to be a lower stall converter than what was originally in the truck (this was my own fault for being impatient). With this info, they built me the converter that is currently in the truck now. This same converter that has has gone 1.57 N/A at 4400lbs, and 1.50 on a 100 shot.

So I have run a total of 3 tq converters, not 20, and have only dropped 100lbs since pulling the first one out.
