Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the help and advice regarding putting synthetic into my truck and what brands are best. Same goes for the oil filter. Special thanks to Burla for all his help and knowledge.

Sweet. I need to research more before i do my first oil change. Are there any threads on here that helped you make your decision?

I need to source RP and Amsoil and see whats available locally, and at what pricing, etc.

You can get RP at most auto parts stores and there's a million people selling Amsoil in the U.S.

I ran RP in my 03 hemi for years with great results. I switched over to Amsoil after going with the 370" stroker, but that was just to say that I tried something different. Never had an issue with either of these brands.

how many qts do these trucks hold? im @ 800 miles on my new truck.
Im also debating what oil to go with when its due for its change.
Im assuming the oil from the factory is conventional and not synthetic right?

Specs say 7 qts for the RAM 1500 with the 5.7.

Correct and as stated it is 7 qts with filter.

Make sure you buy 8 qts though. Every Ram I used to change oil on at a dodge dealership took between 7 and 8.

What weight are you guys using?

And how frequent are you changing your oil with the RP stuff? How many changes are the filters good for?

The book says up to 8k miles max to maintain warranty. I would advise at least that for warranty reasons. I did 5k, 5k, 6k, 6k. With extended filters and Mobil 1. With the rp filter and oil I intend on the full 8k.

Check below for the synthetic thread, you can't go wrong with either of those choices. Also, just as important find a filter with synthetic media, I know Royal Purple filters have great construction for extended oil chnage intervals. Whatever filter you use, double check it after your first change. Cut it open and see if there is any stiffness or rips in the media etc.

I'll try and change my oil every 5-6k miles, but you could go for 8k with no problems, and I replace my filter every oil change but I'll usually only get a k&n filter.
