I know there are numerous threads and I have searched and searched on here and the net in general.

Here is the quick skinny. Iowa no longer has 89 octane. My top tier gas station choice is Quik Trip (QT). They sell 87 no ethanol, 87 w/ ethanol (formerly 89), and premium 91 w/ ethanol.

What would be your choice and why? Thank you for your help. I have an OCD with issues like this.

Ethanol contains less heat energy so I would opt for the 87 octane pure gas. Octane does not contain any heat energy either, it simply reduces the volatility of the gas to avoid pre-detonation which is likely to occur when the engine is under a severe load during hot weather.

Thanks for the quick responses! Any reason not to use the 91 w/ ethanol since 89 isn't around even though one maybe wasting money?

How much ethanol is in the 91? If it's 15% or less, go for the 91. Your MPG will drop, but it will likely drop just as much with the pure 87...

All of our gas here has 10% ethanol including the 91. There is a station that sells 91 w/o ethanol but isn't top tier.
There is E85 and some gas with 15% ethanol but I stay away from both of them even with my previous F150 that was flex fuel.

Go for price. I use 87 without issue because the price difference between 87 and 91 is outrageous here and if i cant tell the difference i see no use paying more.

The price difference I think currently is about $0.20/gallon from 87 no ethanol to 91 w/ ethanol.

I see no issues with 91 octane but I would choose 87 less ethanol for sure. I honestly find NOTHING good with ethanol and wish it would be done away with. 91 should have a few added detergents but other than that just mildly reduced detonation.

I always ran the 89 with ethanol until they switched it about 3 years ago. I've run the 87 with ethanol since then and haven't noticed any difference or had any problems. I've probably put on 50,000 miles since then. I do fill up with 91 or 93 (depending on what's available) before I tow my camper. I don't think I would need to do that, but I feel better because the engine is going to be working quite a bit pulling.

Using any of the fuel mentioned isn't going to hurt anything. The engine will detect pre-detonation events that you can't tell is happening and will pull timing to save the engine parts, maybe a lot under some conditions. This hurts performance.

Some 5.7s run just fine on 87, others are a bit more temperamental and want more octane.

So the bottom line is you won't hurt anything, try all the grades/types and pick the one best for you... which may be different than another 5.7 down the street.

Thank you all. Pumped in the 91 w/ ethanol last night. Curious to see what mileage will be seen.
