no start up lifter noise here. and Mine doesnt care if it is up to operating temperature after a 30 minute drive or the first start on a cold day.

If I had to take a guess it is something tip start/ ignition related. some sort of electrical or sensor malfunction maybe. Its almost as if when the problem happens like there is a delayed signal recognition from something like the crank sensor or something along those lines.

Just spit balling here. Give me a carburetor vehicle and I can pin point a problem from a mile away. These days there is just to many damn electronics tied into everything and even finding something that could be a potential simple issue takes a massive amount of effort.

Obviously its a fairly common issue. You would think chrysler would be able to tell folks whats going on by now.

X2

That is how mine acts. It could be electrical/sensor related as sensors have to be working for the fuel to flow.

Hi Wilsaaron,

Was your dealership aware that the concern you're describing prevents itself after a longer drive? It's possible it was not test driven long enough for the issue to be replicated.

Hi Kori. The length of the drive does not seem to matter. Sometimes its a short drive. The real problem with the diagnosis is that it cannot be easily replicated. Sometimes i'll go 10+ days without it happening (est. 4-5 startups per day), sometimes it will happen after only a couple of days. I have started a log to track when it happens. It behaves like its a fuel issue.

Oh, gotcha! Let me know if I can follow up with your dealership if you're bringing it in again.

Update: After working with my dealer and RAM factory technicians the likely cause was determined to be the fuel pump relay. My dealer installed a by-pass relay that hopefully will circumvent the issue. I'll report back if the issue recurs again. This was a very difficult problem to diagnose due to the rare occurrence of the problem (would randomly occur every few weeks under varying circumstances). RAM and my dealer were very good to work with during the course of the diagnosis and repair. Hope this will help others.

Thank you for the info and let us know if problem continues. I have to ask, why did they do the bypass relay and not replace the original relay?

Update: The fuel pump relay bi-pass has NOT solved my issue. The extended cranking has occurred on 2 separate occasions since my last visit to the dealer. I don't have an answer as to why the opted to by-pass the relay instead of replace it - other than it likely would have cost them more time to replace. Will post back as this progresses.

Sounds like the injectors are leaking down and putting too much fuel in the cylinders and the extended crank finally clears the flooded cylinders and it will crank and stumble because too much fuel in the cylinders. After it clears up the cylinders it will run fine.

Whetrick: If leaking injectors were the issue would it not happen all the time and not just intermittently?

Thanks

Nope I had a Chevy that would leak in the cylinders at random times and found out that the fuel regulator was causing the problem.

I have a 2005 truck that started this at around 34,000 miles. Dealer ****** me around until warranty went out (36000 miles) then said they can't help. I've replaced plug, injectors, crank sensor, battery, and fuel pressure is always around 63 lbs. truck has 120,000 miles now. It got worse the longer it went. Got miss fire cylinder #2 code.
Truck dropped a valve set and blew a hole in the side of engine. Just bought a new engine for it. Hope it fixes the problem. I'll keep in touch

Same problem....

New engine didn't fix a thing with the long crank time. Has anyone tried a new throttle body? I'm thinking that's what it could be

My 6.4 was doing something similar. The dealer replace the EGR under under a TSB and hit was worked fine ever since. Mine was worse when the vehicle was at running temps.

A weak battery plays havoc with the electronics these days. I would check the battary.

What did you do to fix it? Battery is a week old. My truck don't have the EGR. I might try replacing more injectors.

My truck does the extended cranks on hot days only if it's site all day and I get off work and 10 sec or more it's constantly cranking . Sometimes the turning acc to on 3 to 4 times works but if its a hot 95°plus it'll still do a 10swc plus crank after turning key on 3 to 4 times with 5 sec holds each time....75k miles on truck been like this since 5k miles. No luck with dealer they said it's either fuel pump or TIMP..........

I swapped some injectors in mine. It helped it for a week or 2, but still had the long crank at times. Don't matter what the temperature is outside. I'm going to swap out the other injectors and see what that does

I have changed plugs and air filter, but not fuel. My good friend has a snap on computer, it says all that stuff is ok.
