For those who don't know , I recently changed the Eng oil in my 2014 Ram 4x4 QC 5.7 To REDLINE 5W-30 & RP 10-48 filter , I'm so very impressed with how smooth and quiet my Hemi is now as opposed to the FREE black watery thin junk from the dealers bulk oil drum I'm now upgrading the oil in the wife's car and on both our vehicles rear end oils .

I have become lazy over the past few months... I had time today to sit down and visit a few of my favorite web sites and come across this info... Some might not care, which is perfectly fine... Others will find it interesting and shake their heads...

One thing to Remember in {Todays} world--->A 20Wt is considered Thin! & A 30Wt is considered Thick which is ridiculous! In {Tomorrows} world--->Both these oils will be considered like MOLASSES!!! We NOW have the 16Wt showing up on the shelves and becoming the spec weight... Which is shocking! Well! Hold on to your Socks!! Thick Oil Guys!

Introducing the SAE 8 and SAE 12 Viscosity Grades - oilspecifications.org

These New Very Light Weight oils are going to have some Unreal Advanced Additive Technology incorporated into their already Remarkable Base Oil Formulas... I wonder what the future holds for the Turbo Charged and Supercharged engines {Within the Lubrication World}?

I only wonder how long it will be before We stop seeing the 30Wt oils on our shelves?

Thoughts?

How's the 5w-30 treating her? Any MDS issues?

Syn, that has to be one crazy additive package to for 8-12wt to perform at all when at operating temp. I mean that has to be thinner than water at 200+ degrees...

My 5w20 has been treating me well but definitely wouldn't want to go any thinner on the big end .

was a HEMI 5.7
the motor was built and designed for the specified weight oil, by people smarter than me, I'm staying with a quality synthetic (m1) and regular changes

Just waiting to Hit the 20K Kilometers (12 K Miles) and then the Jeep will be broke in enough to start using Synthetic.

In my Magnum I currently have Castrol and it seems to tick more than when I had Mobil one in there. Still up in the Air wether to switch to Royal Purple or Lucas. I change the Oil once a year and only drive about 6 K Miles.
I just put Redline 5W -30 and a Mobil 1 = M1 - 204 filter on my wife's Magnum , her engine has never ran so smooooth and quiet !

On my 15 Ram Hemi it's 5w20

Yes Ram says to use 5-20, but there is a blurb in the manual that says 5-30 can be used if 5-20 isn't available. there has been a big debate, 129 pages worth in the topic "anyone using 5-30" worth the read time, many guys are using it with no problems and some say its quieted the motor.

I believe the blurb in the manual states 5w30 if towing or hard use and mine doesn't fall into neither categories . Mines so quiet now with 5w20 you could hear a mouse fart
So 5w20 FTW ..
Id rather run what The manufacturer recommends not the forum .
Just saying ...

Unfortunately we are not all that lucky. My truck with 7500 miles I should hear mice farting constantly...

I'm giving 5w-30 a shot next change before the dealer tears my motor down with less than 10k on the odometer.

Totally understand and I would be searching or reaching for a way to make it quiet also . I've always believed in if its not broken don't fix it. Again if mine was loud I'd be switching to 5w30 also

Factor: I agree 100%! If it's not Broke Leave it the heck alone!

I want to say this-->If I had not ever joined this forum I honestly would still be running M1 AFE or EP 0W-20! My 5.7L was quiet and very smooth!

After reading hundreds of posts here as well as BITOG! I spent a bit of time researching the 5.7L and the 20Wt magical Myth... Most posts were some of the MOST ridiculous statements and ramblings I have heard... Esp the statements claiming the 5.7L was designed to run on 20Wt and if 30Wt was used, the engine would implode and all kinds of parts would come shooting out the exhaust tips... There were so many false BS being squirted out... with not one of them with ACTUAL Data or Proof too support their Outlandish Statements...

All for the reason for me to do the actual research and prove to MYSELF that what they were saying was totally False! That was Not hard to do... I know of 3 owners who are using M1 0W-40 in their 5.7L with No issues...

Anyway to make a long ******** Story short... The 30Wt actually did quiet my 5.7L even more... And also smoothed out the idle...

I try so hard to not concern myself with what other owners do or say... But when crap is thrown out here and there with No thought or Reason just to try to make themselves look intelligent or make their ego fatter or raise their post count higher... I feel a need to at least add my 4 cents...

This forum has a good Core group who spends the time gathering truthful facts
& data about and on subject matter, before just Pooping it through out these forums with No Thought or Sense....
I applaud Those & hope they continue to do so and to help persuade others too do the same...

Lets go back in time a bit. The year 2003.
Ram 1500 hemi owners manual.

eh0idy.jpg

5w30 and :gasp: 10w30! What were they thinking those crazy manufacturers :roflsquared:

Next, the year 2006. The introduction of MDS.

2922ycx.jpg

Now 5w20 is somehow the best choice across all temperature ranges and "improves low temperature starting and vehicle fuel economy"
Im pretty sure that if you took two hemis and put them in the cold room at say -25 celcius, one with PP 5w20 and one PP 5w30 they would both start identically. Remember that 5 is the winter number.
And again the difference in fuel economy of 5w20 vs 5w30 is measured in decimals. It looks good on paper but the consumer will never see it.

Now to 2014

ea60c9.jpg

Now if you are unable to procure 5w20 5w30 is good if it meets fiat standard. Which, at a glance, seems to be euro equivalents of our normal 5w30 syn (valvoline syn power, castrol magnatec, shell helix, et cetra)
It doesn't even say to change it back at the next oil change lol.
Also the hd trucks with the 5.7 and a GCWR of 14000 lbs or more should use 5w30 all the time.

So, in conclusion, you can all use whats on the oil cap if you like but that doesn't mean the engine was designed around 5w20 lol

Thank you for enjoying my presentation :favorites13:
