It was rather warm this weekend and the R/T did not like it at all, but what bothered me was my trans temps. Just cruising down the highway they were up at 205. Usually run around 160-180... I'm a little concerned that something with the rebuild isn't right. No load, not driving hard I should not see temps that high. It also threw a code saying trans temp was out of range.

Thoughts?

Dealer rebuilt or after market? Seems high to me. Highest I've seen mine was 193 and that was on a 120 mile drive. All highway.

Dealer rebuild under warranty.... It has to go back in anyway for other stuff so I'll have to have them look at this too. its the second time I've notice the temp out of range

If it has a trans cooler (Wich is should) may need to have been flushed when it was rebuilt. Could be causing a lack of circulation. Or the front pump is going out if it wasn't replaced as well.

Both thoughts I have had. This will be the second time I will have brought it back for a leaking trans pan... Fluid is full but still leaks from a crappy install. they also had to have my truck longer cause on one of the parts o-ring seals they nicked it, had to order more parts. Makes me question the trans tech's work that did it...

I have rebuilt a lot of equipment with all sorts of O-ring seals on John Deere and CAT equipment and the only way I see to do that is installing it "dry". I really question it. It has a labor warranty on it but not sure how long.
Just need to get going on the Manual swap parts collection

I had a tranny done at Ford, they didn't change the rear main with the job, so for that 20 dollar seal I had to deal with a leaky rear-main for 8 years. They wouldn't fix it, they said was in tolerances. I was too busy to sue but I sure shoulda. Ester based tranny oils are good for like 30 degrees over mineral, look into it. 205 isn't terrible, but it is way over mine. I think it is as low as 150 after an hour driving at that is the original oil.

trans temp fail chart.

205 is too high, IMO.

I've been up to 191 degrees on mine, that was hot lapping 1/8 mile passes during an elimination race in 90 degree weather, on the bottle. No way you should be seeing temps over that just from driving it around.

I've seen high 190's towing. Don't know if I've seen 200° while towing though.

why would you be worried about the front pump? Unless it's been pumping rocks or big chunks of shrapnel, it should be ok. The things that would create a lot of extra heat are ambient temp, contaminated coolers, extra heavy loading, bad converter, slipping clutches/bands, or any combination of these things.

If you have a transmission that's worn out enough to get a rebuild. The pump is just as wore out and should be replaced. The clutch material from the trans gets pumped through. It will wear the pump out. It should have been replaced along with the converter.

And it sounds like whoever you're going to, I'd go somewhere else.

Problem is this trans has about 3000 miles since its rebuild, all of that is new, and if seals are bad and pressures are bad it will start damaging other parts too.

forgot to add, it was at 105 degree weather and hitting 100mph here and there.

Have you checked your trans fluid level?

Kinda hard to, they are one of 2 dealers that are in a reasonable distance to me and wont go tot he other dealer if they gave me a free truck.... Its under warranty with them so I kinda have to take it to them. I'm not sure how Service warranties work with an expired vehicle warranty. My trans is covered since they repaired it but the rest of the truck is now out of warranty due to timed out and mileage. They are willing to fix it and called me to see if all was good a week ago. I've just been to busy to drop it off to them to fix and check again. hopefully next week I can sneak it in and leave it with them when I am out of town for a week. that way the silicone can set properly before its driven and not fail for the second time.

Yeah, Nothing substantially low that would cause an issues, still within operating range. Didn't smell it for being burnt though... shoulda done that..

Well a little update, they finally figured out after 3 trips why the trans pan was leaking, turns out the shop tech stripped 2 of the pan bolts... also they said that 220 was a normal temp.... I still have my doubts but the trans has a 2 year unlimited mile warranty on it, so basically I will not be nice to it and if it blows before I get to the swap they will fix it.

I can't remember what my trans temp was before I did the 180 T stat swap but normal everyday driving I'm hitting 192 and won't budge from there seems normal to me. Coolant stays at 180-190, oil is about 195-205 depending how hard I am.

YEAH, I WAS HITTING 220-230.. Too high in my book should never be higher than the Engine oil temp. which mine is usually 195-205.

My old ram 48re POS never got above 180 but I also had a larger cooler and fan on it for towing.

Holy crap!!! That's hot. This was my temps cruising 70mph about three weeks ago (before the 180 Tstat install).
