Hi everyone, I have a 2012 Ram 1500. Has he HEMI. It has 80,000 km. I always used regular oil from new. Just wondering thought on synthetic oil. Is it a good idea to change or save money per oil change and stay with regular oil?
I change every 5000 km right now. Will probably stay changing every 5000 km just because use to it.
Thank you for input

We have a synthetic oi thread, check it out. Not all regular oils are created equal, and neither are all synthetic oils. Some have high detergents that could be good for an engine that is starting to hit 100k miles. I have one regular oil in my garage, it is penzoil yellow bottle (pyb). The reason has nothing to do with brand name, but it is the only otc product that has over 200ppm moly (read moly link), something you may want in your oil. This product in my opinion would be better then the many oils that have zero moly but are synthetic. There is an oil for every budget, m1 costco deal is still the best deal in motor oil and is top notch, then you can step up to Penzoil Ultra Platinum, or even go up from there like some of us do. Another thing is to consider filter, old paper filters do not hold up as well as synthetic microglass filters. Royal Purple, fram ultra, wix xp, napa platinum, amsoil, are all filters that will last the life of your oil.

I use PUP in my rides

He may not know what that is, which is Penzoil Ultra Platinum and the high detergent oil I was referring too above. The 0w40 was made in cooperation with Chrysler and Pennzoil to make something specific for the 6.4 Hemi, also good to use in the 5.7. Really need to plug into syn thread for more, the 0w40 has a very desirable formula, we have many guys including oil guys Syn and H395 (soon rlk) that mix the 0w40 with lighter weight PUP oils to get a better formula (more moly).

PYB is also the only standard oil I would use. Quaker State Ultimate Durability is a good "synthetic" oil with a good chunk of moly in it, the last time I checked. My dad is an avid QS user, it's the only oil he has used over the last 15 years or so, and he put almost 400k miles on his 2500 with 5.7, with zero engine issues. Just plain ol' QS oil, fram orange cans, and 3k oil changes.

I have the 6.4 so Penzoil Synthetic 0W-40 is pretty much what I have to use but would be what I use even if there were other brands approved for the engine. I use 5qts. of that, then top it off with Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabilizer. It is probably over kill but I don't run that many miles so I only change oil about three times a year. Worth the peace of mind for me.
I buy Wix oil filters when they are on sale. I used to use Fram Extended Guard but have been reading about a lot of failed filters of late so I switched.
Todays oils are so much better than they used to be 25-30 years ago. If you change it according to your driving habits you should be good with just about anything.

One thing to think about & remember.
4Qts PUP 5W-30 / 3Qts PUP SRT 0W-40 w/RP Filter is an amazing/awesome combo but a pain to acquire. Also at a cost!

I feel 4Qts SRT 0W-40 / 3Qts PUP 5W-30 would have been a superior combo as well!
If I had kept my 5.7L either of these 2 combos would have been in the crankcase while doing 1 year OCI with either a RP or FU filter.

It's just to bad these remarkable oils can't be purchased on every stores shelves.

Op, you could check out red line oil. If fg or no other reason than to make an informed decision.

I do believe that my 2012 392 SRT8 came with Penn minus the PUP from the factory:favorites13:

In my last truck, I ran Mobil One from day 1, with a K&N filter (2005 1500 5.7 Hemi)

The new truck gets the PUP from the dealership (not sure what filter they are using on it)
