I've only got 33k miles on my Ram 1500 Hemi 5.7l but when I was warming it up I could a sworn I smelled Coolant but I could have been wrong.

So I start driving, and I'm being super soft and not hard on the gas, I changed the EVIC to monitor my Coolant Temp and I don't remember what it normally runs at but I could have sworn it was under 200° when normally driving. So when the EVIC said my Coolant Temp was 200°, then 202° and finally 204° right as I turned it off to go into a store. Now I am a little bit worried because like i said earlier I could have sworn average Coolant Temp is 197° when you drive normal and not hard on the throttle.

Outside temp is 55°. And I was driving really soft and easy.

What does everyone's EVIC say their Coolant Temp is at during normal driving?

Coolant and trans temp

Just wondering if anyone knows what a good temp for the trany and the coolant to be running at?

Thanks to all that reply.

Thanks... just bought the truck a little over a month ago and the first day I fooled around with the EVIC menus and then I've left it on MPG ever since. So when I (thought I) smelled Coolant, I switched over to monitor the Coolant Temp and noticed it kept climbing and climbing until I shut it off at 204° when I got to where I was going. I was nervous it was going to keep going and going.

But I just drove for 10+ minutes and it went back upto 204° right away but then went down to 197° and continued to fluctuate between 204° & 197° as I stopped at lights and then got up to speed.

So I'm just gonna assume 197° - 204° is normal Coolant Temps in 61°F weather.

When I had my 96 VW vr6 gti I had a Digital Coolant Temp thing on my gauges and normal was 194. If I drove hard it would go upto 202 and on like 100° summer days if I drove hard it would reach 214°-215° and whenever it got that high I would always turn it off for a few and let it cool off. So when I seen mine rapidly climbing to 204° I got nervous.

P.S. My trans temp is 111° lol... that chart only went down to 175. My trans runs super cool.

That's normal. 204 is nothing to worry about.

From my understanding, guys with the 6 speed trans will want to see a max of 160-170 degrees, but standard operating temperature of the 8 speed is 185-205 degrees.

They come with a 203 degree thermostat. I put a 180 in mine so you could do that if those temps bother you but otherwise that's perfectly normal.
