I recently replaced the engine belt so I know that the noise isn't coming from there. I read that it could be power steering and it was a touch low, so I filled it up a bit but still makes the sounds when accelerating.

Probably the gears or pinion bearings?

I can check the rear end gears later after work, I had 4.56 gears installed almost two years ago, I changed the fluid once already like you're supposed to, but it also hasn't been 30,000 miles since I have had them.

Hummmmm.......hopefully it was a good quality gear set and the backlashc was set properly and they are not wearing out prematurely.

You checked all of your idler pulleys? What area of the truck is it coming from?

My guess is the pinion nut backed off and torched your setup.

^^^ha! I know that whine too!

Engine belt was replaced....tensioner too tight? Does it go away once warm?

Accelerating makes the wine increase or is it constant? Hear it at idle?

IMHO your always going to get a little more gear "noise" from a set of 4.56's vs stock gearing, even if there set up correctly. This doesn't mean that they will be crazy loud, if that's the case you need to open up the rear end and check it out as has been recommended.

It sounds like it's coming from the front end. The sound only comes from accelerating and decelerating. They should be good quality gears, I bought them from Moe's performance.
I also have a vararam intake.

Truth be told, this sound has been here for a while, like at least over a year. I had a loud exhaust and would tune it out but now that the factory exhaust is back on, it is really noticeable. So I was wondering if something was wrong that I could fix and make the sound go away.

The whine isn't loud, but you can definitely hear it with music on.

Quality of gear doesn't mean the backlash and adjustments are or we're right so you may have issues with the setup on the front.

I had the same whining and it turned out to be the pinion bearing was bad. The tension on the pinion bearing has to just right to allow expansion when it heats up and then cools off to contract. If you had a gear swap as I did this would be my guess. I went almost the same amount of time as you, 27k and about 2 years.

Okay thank you! He is a cool cat and did a lot of my work so he probably will adjust it for free.

The rear in these trucks seems to be hard for people to get right. Mine was spot on and had no noise before the dealer touched it for the pinion nut recall. I should have never brought it in. Live and learn.

Does the whining appears only when you drive or also when you just accelerate in neutral?
This question will exclude the rear diff or something on the engine depend if it is noticeable driving or not.
The 2002 Ford Explorer has a problem with the rear differential and it makes more a humming noise than a whining.
