I am very seriously thinking about it for my first oil change.

But Maybe I will wait until more research has been gathered!

I may be old school but personally I wouldn't put any other viscosity in other than what Chrysler says to use.

Chances are your mds will act up. Mds is designed around 5w20 and there is a code it'll throw if you use the wrong oil weight, and your mds will stop working.

From the 2014 owner's manual:
NOTE: MOPAR® SAE 5W-30 engine oil approved to
Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395 may be used when
SAE 5W-20 engine oil meeting MS-6395 is not available.

FYI - Never hear anyone talking about engine flushes here, but this is also from the manual:
CAUTION!
Do not use chemical flushes in your engine oil as the
chemicals can damage your engine. Such damage is
not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

NYCruiser: My 2014 Owners Manual does not say that-->I might have missed it.

On page 202 it displays for 3.6L and 5.7L

We recommend you use API Certified SAE 5W-20 Engine Oil, meeting the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395 such as MOPAR, Pennzoil and Shell Helix. Refer to your engine oil filler cap for correct SAE grade.

Maybe I over looked what you seen? What page?

Thanks SyN

If I am not mistaken, the 2500s with the Hemis can run 5w-30 oil, can't they? They may not have MDS though.

Page 687 in the PDF version downloaded from Mopar site. Here's the whole section:

Engine Oil Viscosity — 3.6L/5.7L Engines (1500Models Only)

MOPAR® SAE 5W-20 engine oil approved to Chrysler
Material Standard MS-6395 or equivalent Pennzoil® or
Shell Helix® is recommended for all operating temperatures.
This engine oil improves low temperature starting
and vehicle fuel economy.
The engine oil filler cap also shows the recommended
engine oil viscosity for your vehicle. For information on
engine oil filler cap location, refer to “Engine Compartment”
in “Maintaining Your Vehicle” for further information.
NOTE: MOPAR® SAE 5W-30 engine oil approved to
Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395 may be used when
SAE 5W-20 engine oil meeting MS-6395 is not available.

The flush warning is on page 691

I just got my Hemi about a month or so ago. I bought it used with 30k on it. I had looked before at the oil change sticker, but really only checking the mileage. I happened to look last night and I saw my truck has 5w 30 in it. Ive checked the dipstick and it appears the oil is still clean and theres like over 2k miles before its time for a change. I dont know what I am gonna do? There is NO hemi tick and the motor runs great, seems like brand new. It is very hot and humid here in south Louisiana. Maybe the 5w 30 will be OK. I am debating syn, and I cant tell what kind of 5w 30 is in it now.Hmmmm.

Keep updating us for the next week if you don't mind sir, especially if you get any check engine lights or engine sounds sour.

So far so good?

Just my honest opinion--> The difference between 5W-20 & 5W-30 in nothing drastic.

I maybe can see going from 5W-20 to a 10W-40 or 15W-40 or thicker might cause an issue.

But a 5W-30 or 10W-30? Maybe I am wrong with this 5.7L?

My sons 09 5.4L 3V is supposed to ONLY be feed with 5W-20!!! I was told Ford designed the 5.4L 3V around 5W-20!! Which is the biggest BS story I've heard!!

Anyway the last 24K miles his 5.4L has been sloshing around in M1 0W-40. One of M1 most robust Oils! His 5.4L never has run smoother! Quieter!

Well I've gone almost 200 miles on the oil change. And nothing out of the ordinary has happened.

It's good to go. If a code was going to set for slow cam response, it would have set immediately when the Vvt temp enabled.

Alright.. amateur and possibly silly question here...

I have always thought that an oil with a viscosity rating of lets say 5W-30 meant the the oil will never get heavier than 30W when cold and never thinner than 5w at operating temperatures. (my way of thinking about it in my head). But reading the forums, I must be completely wrong. Can someone explain the basics of these numbers for me and others on here that may be a bit confused? or a lot confused?! lol

What we all use these days is multi grade oils, the first portion is the "W" winter rating and tells you it flows in cold temps, for example 0w20 weight flows better then 5w20 in freezing temps. In reality it doesn't get cold enough to matter, but that is your winter rating and if you are in sub zero weather it isn't a bad idea to go real low. Even though they both flow well below zero degrees, the 0 weight will still flow faster at those temps. The second part is flow rate when it is operating temps, so 5w20 will flow faster then 5w30 at operating temps.

So I looked up my favorite oil, 5w20 flows down to -49F and 0w20 flows down to -76f. Pretty much the coldest temp in America ever was like -80, and since you have a body over the engine I'm sure 0w20 would have worked just fine, if the battery wasn't frozen that is :)

Stick to the 5w20

I bought 5w30 by mistake once and put it in anyway thinking it wouldn't really matter. The change oil light came on a few hundred miles later, So I changed it again this time with 5w20. That was an expensive oil change that I won't do again.
