I finally found sometime to post some pictures after installing the PPE on my ZF 8HP70. Of course the first thing was relocating my exhaust system (a major shout out to Mike’s Muffler Shop who did an amazing job!!! No bubble gum welding here with a factory appearance!!!).

And after giving it a lot of thought I went with Ravenol. This fluid and of course the factory fill is made exclusively for the ZF 8HP70 (apparently there is an additive like what you would add to a LSD, that has the disks slip in a precise manner). I looked at Shawn’s video and unless he’s towing houses (more like dragging them) his fluid has a lot of metal (I think he blew it adding Lucas to his fluid)! The other thing to keep in mind, is that whatever you choose to add if you drop the pan, you are only going to replace about half the fluid (another reason to go with the PPE so you can get an additional 2 quarts)!! That means you’re going to mix with the factory fill.

When we dropped the pan (also a big shout out to both Jimmy and Alfonso at Cerritos Dodge) it was so clean I could not detect any traces of metal (I dropped mine at 17,500), which I expected to see after breaking in my transmission. My filter was white and I could not detect anything on it. Clearly the ZF fluid is perfectly engineered for this transmission (I would not be surprised if Ravenol is the maker).

And finally, after towing my boat (about 2500 lbs. 65 Fahrenheit) for 20 miles mostly on a slight uphill and with some traffic. I never exceeded 194 (192 is about the average with this transmission without towing), which let me know the PPE rocks!!

Came out sweet!!! How does the changeable filter look compared with the oem in the ppe pan? It's replaceable which is nice. How many qts did you get to fit in before trickling out. I am planning on this same mod as well. It's on my list! Awesome write up thanks for sharing!!!:)

About 1.5 gallons. And according to PPE the filter should be an improvement over the stock one (I believe 2 microns). It costs $35.00 dollars for a replacement.

Simply a personal preference. Plus it makes for a great bookmarker!

In the meantime you can cut & paste what I wrote and change the color. Sorry for the inconvenience

It's actually easier to read on my screen....lol

Did you have to go through the same process....warm up...shift through gears...check....add...shift through gears...check...until trickle

What I did was drop the fluid. And then add the new one between 90 to 122 Fahrenheit (with the engine running). And here's the key, go out and drive until you reach a minimum of 160 Fahrenheit, to open up the cooler to get the rest of the fluid into the mix. After that, let your truck cool back down to 90 (you're better off waiting until the next day), then check your level again and add if needed! Whew!!

Great addition! I am starting to agree the ZF/Ravenol ATF is Top Notch! Even though the price per Qt is absolutely ridiculous!

If we chose to keep my 1500 Ram. Like I have stated months ago this will be my next project @ the 30K mike mark. I as well will have the drivers side exhaust rerouted. Will make future servicing of the 8HP70 a breeze.

As of now we are looking @ a 2017 2500 CTD to aid in towing our future new 5th wheel TT.

Great write up! Many Thanks! The PPE pan is the best option if one can afford it.

Thanks! I opted for the brushed finish (to match the Mag Hytec)!

And the other thing was to go out there and find the best deal! $263 delivered for the aluminum finish!

Again great write up!!!

I was thinking they only came in one color but I digged in and discovered they come in 3 finishes. Aluminum, Black and Brushed (Black and Brushed cost more).

Glad they didn't pull a Henry Ford and say "any color you want as long as it's aluminum!"

So brushed is the color that matches best then? Like a two tone...

Here is a link to the pan....I just don't see where you can change the finishes.
Rude dog do you a link to the page where you can change the finishes. I really like these pans as well as the extra capacity. The exhaust defiantly has to be reworked...especially on mine as I have longtube headers. They did a super job on yours!!
