The AC in my 1500 4.7 2008 is busted. My mechanic had charged it with refrigerant and leak dye and la week later it stopped working again. He's checked with a UV light in the engine bay but could not find a leak. The only think left is the evaporator. In your opinion, what's the easiest way to check if it is the evaporator? Should I just assume it is the evaporator, order one and replace it, recharge the system and hope for the best? How much are they?

Depending on who you go to will determine the price. Evaporator as a part can range from 175 to 400 bucks depending on where you buy it. If the freedom left the system that quickly, then it's safe to assume the evaporator is leaking. You shook also be noticing a funky smell out of your vents.

I would almost bet it's the evaporator, I was having the same problem on my 98 , check Amazon, I just bought one for my 98 and it was fair priced. Ac is cooling like a champ now. I would go ahead and replace the heater core also since you'll have the box out anyway

As long as you have the entire dash and components ripped out you might as well...

Also, change all your dash bulbs too while you're at it.

I can't really think of anything other than heater core and blend door movement. As far as the dash bulbs you do what you want but you don't have to pull the whole dash to change those if you don't want to do that right now

Funny you should say that. I watched a YouTube video this morning on heater box removal on a Gen 2 and the guy had the dash hanging on bungee cords and wondered if that were possible on a Gen 3. It sounds like it is.

Oh, I was talking about the dash lights. You can replace them later instead of when you pull the dash this time. To replace the lights you have to pull the cluster out which you do not have to do to pull the dash out for the evaporator box

I just charged my system for ***** and giggles with the remainder of the can from my Jeep.
The damn thing has blowing cold for a week now.
Strange. The system was charged when the new motor was put in and the AC crapped out in a few days. My mechanic checked for leaks with the light and found nothing under the hood but some dye markings in the vents inside the cab so he guessed it was the evaporator. Damned if I know.
