07 4.7l keep getting the gas cap message then the check engine light. Been through several gas caps since June. Still about once a week the light comes on again, unhook the battery and start over. Seems to happen more when I get down to a 1/4 tank. Is it really the gas cap?

At this point, there is likely a leak somewhere else in the EVAP system. Check the hoses running to the fuel tank and any of the fuel emissions lines under the hood. Might have to take it to a shop that can "fog" the EVAP system to test for leaks and pin point the leak itself.

Thanks I'll start digging into that

You'll have to read the check engine code. I bet you have a leak in the evap system somewhere.

One other thing - is the metal filler neck where the gas cap screws on rusty? If it's rusty, it might not be allowing the cap to seal tightly. If it's rusty, take some marine wheel bearing grease and slime some onto the filler tube where the cap mates to it and see if that takes care of the problem. Had to do that on my last '01 Ram - fresh glob of grease every 3~4 months.

I actually checked that and put the grease on anyway but that wasn't it. Never had a truck so sensitive to a little air.

You have a 4.7 like me. The I had this problem, for me it was the Star Ship Enterprise looking EVAP pump'ish thing (Leak detection pump). If you lay under your truck about a foot in front of the tank (drivers side), if you follow the hose and you will see it.

Check to see if the hoses are attached (not cracked), and the clamps are good. I had to replace the clams while I was at it.

No problem since.
