What is a symptom that you didn't notice/ignored/couldn't afford to get fixed until it was too late?

I've been lucky enough to only have had a shotty alternator destroy a relatively new battery... Out could have been vice-versa.

Nothing ignored, but back in the day, not being able to afford repairs was the impetus for my learning how to twist my own wrenches, both on my rigs and in my homes. Now I have the option to perform the work I want and hire out the work I don't. It taught me the value of having good tools, how to think through a problem and can be up with the occasional creative solution.

When I was 16 or 17, I had a hot girlfriend who told me that her parents were gone and I needed to come over. I was driving a Ford Escort GT at the time and the clutch was shot in it. I didn't have the money to fix it until the next week, but I was young, dumb and .....well, you know, so I hopped in the car and went to her house about 15 miles away, clutch slipping the entire way. On the way home, I was coming up a hill on the highway and the clutch fell completely apart and I was stranded on the hill stopping traffic.

It happened on the way home, so I had no regrets.
