Im currently looking into getting a second truck for work. i came across this 5.7 hemi 1500 mega cab and it is really clean.

https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/657890409/overview/

i was talking to my friend about it and how i had never really seen on in person before. He claimed it because with all the extra weight of the mega cab, it was causing transmissions to wear out faster than normal. Im not really sure about that claim and was curious is anyone on here has had experience with this particular model. New member here too so thanks for the help!

I believe they have a typo. I've never seen or heard of a mega cab 1500. Those look a lot like 2500+ lug nut pattern too

So it's a megacab with 8 lug wheels (presumably 3/4 ton axles obviously) with a 1500 suspension and/or frame?? If so, that is one extremely odd bird! I'm not sure I get it to be honest....

You say "no" based on it was a HEMI. Could you not get a 2500 with a HEMI in 06-08??

Not necessarily. One of our customers from work just bought all their salesmen brand new 2500 4x4 lone star editions with the 5.7 hemi

There's lots of 1500 megacabs running around my area. They're on a 2500 frame but the suspension isn't as heavy duty so it doesn't classify as a 3/4 ton. And there can't be that much extra weight added compared to a 2500 with a hemi and the tranny holds up just fine in them so I call bs on your friends statement.

I call B.S. on the transmission comment. And they did make a 1/2T rated MegaCab in 2006 - 2008.

I owned a 2007 5.7L powered MegaCan 1500. It came with 8 lug hubs, 2500 rated frame, 1/2T springs. Tow rating and load capacity was the same as a 1/2T.

I put 140k miles on it with nary a transmission problem and I towed pretty near max GVWR quite a few times up and over the hills out here in the west.

I kinda miss it. It was a great truck...and then it got smashed.

beauty of a truck!!! is there any way to tell if it is a heavy duty frame? or did all the mega cabs come like that? anything i should really take a look at when i go to test it out?

Thanks. It was a good lookin' truck, even if I say so myself.

When I purchased the truck it looked like this:

279058_s2-1.jpg

All the 3rd gen 1/2T rated MegaCans came with the 2500 frame.

I'd inspect it as you would any other used vehicle. Drive it, inspect it for leaks, make sure all the electronics work, check the oil and coolant for evidence of oil in the water, test the HVAC system, lights, etc...

If you really want to dig deep, get service records and run the VIN through the dealer for service history, TSB work, warranty work, etc...that may have been done at a dealer.

For these trucks not much went wrong. I had a head unit fail (covered under extended warranty), had a steering box bracket replaced with an upgraded one, a noisy differential input bearing replaced and had the driveshaft balanced. Other than that all I had to do was service it and fuel it.

I have a '07 1500 mega cab, most times I say it's a 2500 because, frankly, it's a lot easier than explaining to folks what it really is :) it's similar to the Chev 1500HD from around the same time.

It's a 2500 nearly all the way around. I'm told the ONLY difference is the rear springs - which still have a ~1800 lb. payload, which is pretty stout for a halfer.

Dodge wanted to bring the option of a mega cab to the 1500, but didn't have a suitable frame to accommodate the mega cab's length. So they chose to use a 2500, swapped the rear springs with softer-riding ones, and rebadged it as a 1500.

Edit:

Transmission issues shouldn't be any more prevalent for these trucks than any 2500 gasser - the 545rfe was the OEM trans for all gasser 2500s, they don't seem to have many issues. Drive it like a 3/4 ton if you do buy it, however. Driving it like a sports car will surely empty your wallet :)

My 07 Megacab was a 1500. Not an odd bird at all.

If you do get it, you want to wake that puppy up, get the Superchips programmer and get the shift schedule. Google it and you'll see how to do it.. I still have my schedule if you'd want it...

It was like I gained 100 hp and it shifted SOOOOO much better. LOVED IT!

Friends say it did more than a port/head polish and cam on his truck.

Well worth it!!

As said above, the only difference is 1 missing rear leaf spring. Everything else is shared with the 2500. Weight difference between the two is 75+/-.

2500# payload and 9k towing for the "1500" vs 2700# and 10,800# for the 2500.

I have an 08' with 120k on it. Just towed 6,000+ miles and have towed well over 10k miles with it - up to 5000#. The tranny is fine - just take care of it. The only issue I have is when it downshifts into 1st or 2nd on steep grades, the shifting isn't smooth, so I do it manually.

Best part - no cylinder deactivation.

I just bought an 06 megacab 1500 about a month ago. The dealer replaced the brake module and transfer case Motor. So far I love it!! Lets hope for no issues!!
