I believe that it is a cumulative mpg, so if you've driven it 10,000 miles without resetting it it wont change very much. When you hit reset it resets the miles traveled vs the gallons of gas used

I reset mine each time I fill up. It's never accurate anyways.

There are modules like scan gauge to get real time MPGs if that's what your looking for
