Hello all! I'm looking at buying an 04 Ram 1500 SLT 4x4. Has great maintenance records, 114,000 miles. My biggest concern is this "full time" 4 wd that was an option. I'm still waiting on a reply as to which system this truck has. If it's the full time system, how reliable is this system? I'd imagine MPG would suffer more than what the trucks already do. Tire wear? I did a quick search and couldn't find any hard info.

I know for the 08 a friend of mine had a 4x4 hemi that was 2wd and 4x4 switch. it was 2wd full time unless switch over otherwise. but this is after the facelift, so i am not entirely sure for an 04, but i would like to say it should be the same. but i am sure someone will chime in and reassure your issue.

Good Luck!

Thanks! It's a screaming deal, hopefully it won't be a deal breaker.

Look in the cab of the truck if you can and look for either a switch, or an extra shifter on the floor. If it has either of those then it did not have full time 4wd.

Growing up we had a '74? Ramcharger with full time 4WD and that truck kept going until the body rusted off. Never had any issues. I think they do get a little less MPG.

Mine has 2x4 4x4 AUTO, LOCK, LOW
yours being a 2004 i think youll have a stick shift on the floor to engage 4x4

Personally I would rather have the ability to disengage the 4wd, but that's me. I wanna say they only came in the Laramie, but I'm not completely sure. Should be a good truck, just remember you may have to give it some TLC.

I have never seen a full time 4wd dodge pickup. Everyone I have ever had or driven in had the stick or a switch. Hope this helps.

Well I'm 5 hours drive away, and currently waiting on more interior pics from seller. I'll check that out though! Thanks.

It seems pretty hit or miss on anymore details about the system. I found this brochure in pdf form that talks about it.

I must say, I have never seen one that was full time. If it was like the jeep setup, I am sure it is tough but will have lower mpg's.

It's not the full time option. He's got a guy looking at it tomorrow, hopefully he passes.

That truck ended up being sold. But picked up an 05 1500 SLT. It came with those "daisy" 20" wheels. Not a fan, and planning on getting some factory 17" wheels instead. I'll post pics when I get a chance.
