Smog in socal

My dad had to take his 03 ram with the 5.7 hemi to a "star smog station" ...it didnt pass beacause the idle was not stable any suggestions on how to fix that?

Any suggetions is appreciated. Thanks

What did they mean unstable? Like the RPM's were jumping around or did the o2 show in the not ready state?

Rpm's up and down but on the dash it doesnt show its jumping around.

Does the truck feel like its stumbling or anything? Can do the normal pull the TB and make sure its clean and check the plugs. What all is involved on the test? Luckly we do not have that here yet.

The truck runs good...that used to be my daily driver until i bought my new ram and i ended up giving the 03 to my dad...and the star smog is new to me but i thing its more thoroughly checked.. I know a guy that had to take his mid 90's honda civic and the guy declined to do his smog because he had headers on it....i will try to clean the throttle body and have him try it again.
