I've been driving my first Ram that I sold to my dad when I bought my 08. It's an 05 4.7. Anyways, there is this really bad squealing sound when turning the steering wheel either way. Sounds like it's coming from the steering column. Any ideas what might be causing it?

When you turn does it make the sound only while the steering wheel is turning? Or if you turn the wheel and leave it is it making the sound?

Does it sound when the truck is in motion.

It only makes the sound when the wheel is turning. And it makes the noise when you turn the wheel both when just sitting still and when the truck is in motion.

that could be it, just a suggestion though. I had the same problem 2 weeks ago, it started squeeling and I checked and I almost completely ran out of fluid. It turned out to be the return line clamp, supposedly its a common problem on these trucks.

Thanks, I'll definitely check it. This truck had the same return line problem a couple years after I bought it and it was replaced. Might be the same thing happening again.

Usually with the fluid being low it sounds more of a grunt sound. And would keep the the sound when it is turned. But it is a common thing for this years. But it could just need some oil on the colume since it has quite a bit of moving parts.

yeah, I was wondering if there was anything to oil up in the column, that definitely sounds like where it's coming from. I'm assuming that column cover comes off somehow?

I will check the fluid and if it isn't low and there's no leaks, I will see about oiling up the column. Thanks for the help guys.

its coming from inside the truck?

it should just be i think 2 bolts under the steering wheel in the corners and you should be able to see it.

yeah, it really sounds like it's inside the truck. I'll take a look tomorrow and see if I can see those bolts.

Idk of these pumps are like the older Chevy ones but if the run out o fluid or get low at any time they will make noise for ever after that.

Yeah those old Saginaw pumps would outlast a lot of the Chevys they were on, as long as you kept them from getting low on fluid lol

It doesn't sound like the pump to me since it only makes the noise while the wheel is moving

Hopefully it's just low on fluid :)
