So, my wife is due in march, our second kid. My daughter is 3 today. We were talkn yesterday about how we need a second vehicle. My wive loves mytruck and i love how safe i feel wen her and my kid are in it. This morning she asked me if we could get another ram for her.............:roflsquared: saweet. my truck will be payed off n january. and i can afford up to a 16000$ truck and still be banking the truck payment i will no longer have. She wants- A 3rd gen, needs 4 doors, i want here to have a 4x4 but she dont care, and under 60k miles. Now heres the hard part. She originally wanted a v6. So after searching around there are almost no 4 door v6's that and the mileage on them is almost as bad at the v8. i had to explain that the engine will have to work twice as hard to move the truck therfore.......bad mileage so i narrowed it down to either another hemi or a 4.7. This is were you guys come in. I know there is people on here w/ 4.7's and love em.................or hate em. My question it with all the head problems ive heard of on the 4.7's should i stay away from em? Is there any differences on the 4.7's from 2003-2008? and since i already have my loud hemi. her truck is gunna be the one that everything i do to it will be for mileage. so any tips? 4.7?-hemi? and strickly mpg improvements? Thanks n advance

Dad's been a Mopar Mechanic for 30+ years, he says he's seen more 4.7s blown than anything. I'd stay away from them but that's my 0.02.

Hemi what else??
From experience my 4.7 overheated and became a disaster for me... A lot of people don't have problems with their 4.7s, but I would certainly get another Hemi avoid the headache....And their is not much difference in MPG; MPG is like a 1-2 difference.

The Hemi gets the same mileage atleast my 04 got better the the 06 4.7 I had to drive for 2 days. Get her a 5.7 and you wont have many issues.

okay so everyone seems to have a issue with the 4.7 i got 75k on mine not one bad thing to say other than the lack of power vs the hemi. mpgs are the same. if you can get a 04+ 4.7l with 50k and 1 owner that treated it right you'll have a good truck. i have done mods to accomplish a better running/performing truck, i also have done things like the efan in hopes that it cooled the engine better and wont overheat. i also plan on the 180* stat soon and new fluids so i dont have that issue.......now i have known and know several guys that run a 4.7 with no issues.....

I had a 4.7 and a Hemi, and the Hemi gets better mileage and has more power. So why the hell would you want the 4.7? Unless you were buying a 4th gen were the 4.7 and the V6s are badass then stay away from em.

Yes there is a difference between the 03 and the 08 4.7. In 08 they made changes. It bumped up to 310 hp and also has 16 spark plugs like the hemi.

As for reliability....I don't know.

but also the 02 and 03 is when they first started putting them into our trucks, so after that they got better, and in 08 the got alot better....and reliability mine hasnt left me stranded anywhere....see a thread like this turns to a ******* match because a few have had issues with there 4.7s but were they really treated the way they say or do they really know how the p/o treated it?.....and the milage for gas is a bout the same no diff at all....we could start a mpg thread but that would be ***....

don't fear the 4.7 My dad has one in his dakota with 142K miles and a buddy has an 02 ram with 4.7 and 189K miles. Both have the original engines and have never had any issues.

That being said, if you find a hemi in the price range you are looking at I would get it. Some MPGs and more fun.

Doesn't the 4.7's have a history of blowing head gaskets though.... That alone would make me want to stear clear of them.

lol, well this is fun so far. the only reson i was considering the 4.7 is cause the same truck w/ the same mileage the 4.7 was cheaper but if im gunn ahave to pay to fix it more them hemi it is. not for certain but ive herd more bad then good about it. And who doesnt like a HEMI. And above it was stated that the 08's had a diff 4.7 is that the first year they changed it since the 03 3rd gen body?

they improved the engine in 04 then a bigger improvement with more hp happened in 08, and just cause a few have had bad 4.7s doesn't mean its a bad engine i know so many jeeps and daks that run on it, along with rams that have had no issues....me being one...not 1 thing engine wise has gone wrong, the carrier bearing went out and i replaced the rearend but that can happen with a hemi ram also....

I had a 03 4.7 Ram before the truck I have now and it was a good truck. Never broke down or anything and I had it till 100k. However it wasn't really that fast and my Hemi gets better millage then the 4.7 plus the Hemi has over 100 more hp then the 4.7. Plus wouldn't you like your wife bragging to all the moms that drive minivans that she has a Hemi. :naughty:

from a mpg perspective its proven that a hemi gets better than a 4.7. The only reason i'd get a 4.7 is if you find a really low miles, well maintained, and KILLER deal. Otherwise, stick to the proven power, fuel efficiency (relatively speaking of course) and reliability of the hemi

Get the hemi. You will be happier in the end with the hemi over the 4.7 Better power and equal mpg's.
