I killed two threads on DT asking this question so I thought I'd bring it here since the lowered thread has been neglected for a while. The stock OEM 20" rims many of us like so well have a 5.75" backspacing, with the larger tires they rub with a drop greater than the standard 2/4.5 drop. My question is do the center hub of these wheels have enough meat to machine say 1/4" off the mounting surface? this would give the rim a 6" backspacing and added clearance for more of drop. Maybe someone can measure their hub or post some nice detailed pictures. Thanks,

My unofficial response is- I doubt it. It's been a while since I have looked at a stock rim, but I don't remember being particularly impressed by them. Also, they are cast which makes me wonder how well they would take to being machined.

George, thanks for the reply. Not having one at hand to look at my feeling is also that there isn't enough thickness to take a full 1/4" off. I have no problem machining cast aluminum. The key would be the thickness of the material from the bottom of the lug hole to the mounting face of the wheel. Perhaps inserting a supporting washer under the lug nut would gain some additional strength. Anyway just having a few beers thinking out loud.

Yep, this Red Horse beer will get you thinking outside the box more often then is good for you.
Actually I was already thinking about widening the rear OEM rims on the inside. If this is possible it will move the tire inside the fender and IMO look really good centered in the wheel well from the rear. I don't know if a lot of folks look at stuff like that but I do.

I'll measure it out when I get home and decide whether to cut it or not. We will see...
All inputs are welcomed...

Maybe I am missing something here...but are you just adding a spacer?

No, trying to get more backspacing on a OEM wheel by machining the mounting surface of the rim. I would like to move my wheels inward by a 1/4".

OK, so now I understand lol. I have to agree with the Frog. I think that what you are wanting to do would compromise the structural integrity of the wheels.

I'm not disagreeing, but I need to get some measurements before deciding to do it or not. Even if I could get 3/16" I think it might be worth it. Anyone have a wheel laying around they can measure for me?
