Well my 03 ram has rust.. bubbling and chipping paint off on the wheel wells, and in the cab corners, and the tailgate at the bottom is starting to rust pretty good.. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some tips on removing rust, and or protecting my truck now to stop the spread.. i plan on keeping this one for quite some time and i do not want it to rust apart. Could i just take a grinder and grind off all the rust? then prime, and paint it? any tips or insight would be awesome. Thanks

That's what I did. They have this paint/rust removal tool that attatches to a drill. Did that, then got reallyx gritty sand paper and sanded all the way to the metal, the I primmed, painted and clear coated. So far so good.... though I am no expert, that's just what I did.

Remove all the rust with a grinder, sandpaper, wirebrush, whatever works. If there's some stubborn rust, use a rust converter (spray can). When all the rust is gone, prime, fill, sand, prime, fill, sand, paint, etc.

Use self etching primer once the rust is gone, it'll keep rust from forming in the area again
If you don't plan on painting and leaving primers for a bit use an epoxy primer ontop to seal it since most primers absorb moisture

Depending on the area you can coat the rust with por15 or chasis saver. it uses the rust to bind and prevents it from growing. If there are holes, you really need to grind and weld, but if it isn't on the body or you don't care about the paint match, rust paint is an excellent fix. Comes in a lot of colors too.

Por15 is pricey but is awesome stuff as long as you follow the directions

+1 on using por15. Just apply it on bare metal or surface rust that is sanded and wire wheeled well.
