I'm picking up a grill tomorrow off of craigslist for 30$. Only problem is it's black. I figure for 30$ I'll have a go at painting it. Any suggestions how to go about it. I was thinking a whole lot of sanding and primer paint then clear. Anybody do this already? Do the inserts come out? That would make painting easier.

yep the inserts come out. definitely sand using a 220 grit to start, then maybe a 400 grit. do 2 coats of self filling primer or whatever that stuffs called, lightly wet sand with 800 grit, then 2 or 3 coats thin of color, waiting 30 minutes between coats. after the last coat only wait 10 minutes before you do the first LIGHT coat of clear. this allows a chemical bond between color and clear. another 2 coats or so of clear and let 'er dry :) make sure you're in a dust free area.

Thanks for the tips af. Unfortunately there is no dust free area to work in but the weather will be nice the next few days.

I wouldn't paint the slits. Just paint the shell since you still have chrome bumpers the slits will match the bumpers.

Well autozone carries a chrysler silver but its not for the ps2 code. I tried to see if another one had it but apparently they cant get it. I remember jj had a helluva time finding some when he did my lights. I ended up ordering it from the dealer. Its expensive but ill have it tommorow.

I actually have a can and it does match pretty well. I just wanted it to be as close as possible.

Daniel - I ended up finding it at my local auto paint store. They carry the ENTIRE line of Duplicolor stuff, not just what the retard at AZ feels like ordering.

Nick - I thought you were PSB? Hell, I can't remember what code the paint was at AZ - I think they had PS1......needed PS2.......Not getting the wrong stuff!

Finally got back home and got some before pictures. How do I go about getting the inserts off cuz the little screw things have no heads. And I think that the black grills are actually black plastic so this will be interesting to see how it goes. Im gonna wash it tonight and start sanding a little and really get cracking tomorrow.

I ended up painting my horizontal slits...looks alot better IMO

I did some 400, red scotch brite, 800, 1000. Adhesion promoter x2, filler primer x2(for the lines from sanding), base- light, light, med, heavy, quick light clear over tacky base, med, heavy, heavy....remember that plastic has a hard time keeping paint so dont sand too deep and do VERY light, almost dusting coats for your first couple coats. If you see what looks like a spot that the paint is lifting, do a few more light coats

Yeah im thinking Im starting to lean towards painting them too. I cannot pull those screws, clips out, There is now way to get leverage or a grip on them and they just wont budge.

Push the middle with a pick all the way through. I had to do that when I changed the mesh grill out for the slit grill on our 05. If you want new ones then call the dealer and get the part # then google it. I bought them for .75 a peice and the dealer wanted $4 a peice.
