so i just noticed some bubbles over both my wheel wells about 5 per side and pencil eraser width, if its not to bad under neath i could just sand it down and prime it than put the flares on? or should i paint it too?
what the average price for this if i can't do it myself?

how many miles on the truck? I think the rust warranty is..........5 or 7 years? Might try that route first.

and, if I were you - I wouldn't paint it, I would use some stop rust stuff, like POR - then put the flares over it. If you are going to paint, just fix it correctly and leave the flares off. ;)

yeah there is a rust warranty! Here is what I found for 04, but good luck getting them to honor it.

Basic 3 year / 36,000 miles
Drivetrain 7 year / 70,000 miles
Roadside 7 year / 70,000 miles
Rust 5 year / 100,000 miles
Basic Warranty: The basic warranty covers everything except items that are subject to wear and tear or replacement in the ordinary course of vehicle ownership, such as oil and air filters, wiper blades and brake pads. Tires and batteries are often excluded, but usually have their own warranty provided by the manufacturers of those items. Emissions equipment is required by Federal law to be covered for five years or 50,000 miles.

Drive Train Warranty: In some cases the drive train warranty continues after the basic warranty has expired. This part of the warranty covers most of the parts that make the vehicle move, including the engine, transmission, drive axles and driveshaft. Like the basic warranty, consumable parts such as hoses and belts are not covered. However, most of the internal parts of the engine, such as the pistons and bearings, which are also subject to wear and tear, are covered by the drive train warranty.

Roadside Assistance: Many manufacturers provide a service that will rescue you if your car leaves you stranded, even if it's your fault. Lock yourself our of your car? Run out of gas? Got a flat tire? A call to the manufacturer's toll-free number will result in somebody showing up who can help you out. There is a huge variance in these programs so check ahead of time to see what is covered and what you will have to pay for.

Rust or Corrosion Warranty: Rust or Corrosion Warranty: This warranty covers the vehicle's sheet metal, and protects you from rust and corrosion that are severe enough to cause a hole - surface rust is not covered. However, if you keep your car washed and waxed rust shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah...the only dealer I might be able to get to cover it would be the one that my dad used to work at, but they've changed hands so it might be kind of tough...

this is manufacturer warranty, so it shouldn't matter who owns it.

this is why I don't keep vehicles. I would go fricken' bonkers if I saw rust on my truck. I'd start ripping off parts and I'd take it to a mall and burn it down.

most of them rust from the inside out. a bubble forms from the back side and eats through to the front. by the time you see it.......its a nasty cancer on your truck.

Sorry Bout the Rust Simon, Now Please don't take this the wrong way Dude but if you live east of Kenora Ontario then bubble rust after 5 years is pretty normal. If this is True then the only 100% Cure is to not drive the truck thru the road salt for 5 months of the year. I lived the nightmare of undercoat, Oil, Rustcheck when I lived In NS, NB, QC, and Ont and finally became fortunate enough to discover the Relative rust free world of MB, and finally now AB, So I do share your Pain. My favorite prevention was to warm some chainsaw oil in the wifes electric frying pan then spray it with a devilbis gun to the underneath chassis then take a drive down a dirt road. To fix it I would recomend to use good products (PPG) which are hard to find in a spray can but if you must do it yourself and are gonna cover up with flares anyways then make sure you use rust destroyer (or K-Rust) to get into any pores that remain after the grinding/sanding you may not see with the eye, after it turns black use Tiger hair, then rust check primer followed by tremclad or Canadian Tire Colour-match. I have seen a few 02 models out this way that have bubbles in that area so perhaps it is inherant in these trucks. you wouldn't think it would be caused from behind as there is separate layer of inner fender metal behind there as well, however if it is very humid where you live (I.E. East Coast) I can see why you have to spray inside those areas as well. I used to like the Ziebart Protection too!

i live in south eastern Ontario and have been plagued with salt, snow and humid summers, i expect rust but i dont expet a 5 year old truck to start to rust i had a 95 tercel for 13 years before it started to even show rust. and my 2000 Dakota lasted 8 years

I guess i'm a little mad because i just got the truck in December of 09 and i check it real good and there wasn't anything showing then

all through i have read recently that its a common problem, its the seam where the inner and outer meet, poor factory priming job and there is foam in between that breaks down and holds moister.
i really hope dodge will do something for me but i'm not to confident

Good to know Simon, will keep an eye on that. You can drill some Ziebart access holes on the inside and shoot some high pressure Rust-Check Etc in there too! If prepped properly you should be able to keep it at bay for a while coupled with that internal spray.

I found February in Ontario (Ottawa Valley) to be the worst time for the Rust Monsters to appear as most rust protection has already washed off!

Wow 8 years and your 2000 was toast. Not many of that year out this way too, kinda like the Cheb S-10 or Ranger. I guess my Wife is Luckey with her 2001 PT as it has the original exhaust still on it and is Still White everywhere!

Let us know how you make out x 2!
