Hey guys, first post here.

I just bought a 2004 Ram 1500 and it came with 295/60R20 tires. When checking the sticker on the door and by VIN lookup its showing that the size should be 245/70/R17.

My question, if I wanted to get new tires down the road can I go back to a lower tire size to save some gas or would the previous owner have modified the truck to run these big tires?

If I wanted to use the same rim I could just use smaller 20" tires I think?

Thanks for any help!

the 295/60R20 are approx. 33.9" tall while the 245/70R17 is only approx. 30.5" tall. (may vary slightly by tire brand). That's almost 3.5" difference so either your speedo is wrong or it's been changed for the bigger setup.

A 265/50R20 would be 30.4" which would be awful lose to the 17" 30.5" and you could still keep the 20" rims.

You can switch back to the stock size and 17" rims if you want. 295/60/20 is not a stock size so it's not something that could be programmed by the dealer as far as I know, so the only way to do it on that truck is with a tuner like superchips.

The stock size for 20 inch wheels was 275/60/20 which is a shorter tire 33" tall if you wanted to switch to that

Liking the price of stock 20's much better.

Is there a way to tell if the Speedo has been adjusted to a certain tire size?

I seriously doubt it has been adjusted

If you have a portable garmin or other nav. Unit they usually display how fast you are going and you can see if your truck speedo matches the nav.
