A little MDF goes a long way towards shaping/contouring it to the dash. This is a little different than what you are doing, but you get the idea.

And I loved your design, but could figure it out on my truck with me having the 4x4 shifter...

And I got a little bit done today... Got it wrapped in carpet. I'm sure the carpet would have matched if my carpet was brand new. But its close and I think it looks good.

It's super cheap too. You can carve it, cut it with a razor, 60 grit on a palm sander practically eats the stuff. And it loves glue!
