I have a 03 3500 Dodge Ram I've changed the alternator I've had my battery checked it's okay showing 12 volts. When I start engine it charges for a few minutes then the volt gauge drops to nothing. Vehicle will run for 5 minutes then the truck shuts down. I've checked all connection can't figure out why it won't charge

Check all connections involved with the charging system. Look for loose/corroded connections and grounds. Also take a voltage reading of the battery right after the engine dies - be interesting to see what the battery reads at that point in time.

Ok upon further investigation it seems the ECM tells the alternator when to charge how do I find out if the ECM is doing what it's supposed to? And if it isn't what is the fix do I have to go to a dealer ?
