I have gone through all of the forums looking for an answer to my question but no luck.

I have a 2008 ram with a 5.7 with high millage and the motor started knocking bad. I my garage on a stand is a 5.7 out of a 2005 with 16,000 miles on it. Can I use the short block on the 2008?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, if your 08 is a 1500 then the only difference between the two short blocks is that the 05 doesn't have MDS. You'll either need to add MDS to the 05 or buy a tuner to delete it from your PCM. Welcome to RF.

Thanks for the info, I thought it would work but didn't want to start pulling the old one till I was sure.

You're welcome. I'm planning on swapping an 04 shot block into my 06 pretty soon but fortunately I don't have to deal with any MDS. Is there a reason you don't want to leave the heads on the donor engine? Easiest thing to do would be to drop in the long block and get a tuner.

Wasn't sure if the PCM would work without the MDS lifters. But if I can bypass the whole MDS system with a Tuner than that looks the way to go. Now I will do some research on Tuners. :happy107:

Just keep in mind, if you ever sell/trade in the truck, unless you send the tuner with it there will be a fault if the tuner is unmarried from the truck since the PCM won't have any inputs from the MDS. If you don't intend to, then go for it and enjoy!
