Step one, put oil back in and change your filter. See how it runs and if your "rattling" goes away. Next step is really dependent on how it runs and whether or not its burning oil, or blowing low compression. If neither, you could still drop the pan and check for metal fragments like bearing shavings or cracked rings sections. Or just drive it and keep an eye on your oil level and pressure. Good luck!

I'm sure there are more recommendations coming from other members, so we can both learn a thing or two. :driver:

I already changed it, it sounds better, idles good, and the gauge never dropped in pressure. it had maybe a 1qt in the pan and what was in the filter.

If you drive it every day, an 04 Model IMO (will say 120K miles) should eat a quart to quart and a half a Month without leaking and no appearance of smoke and still require new valve seals. Only time you can tell I need mine replaced is if it sits for a couple days, so sounds like you need to check it weekly! Throw in a quart of Lucas Treatment with every Oil change will help with the Tick and consumption.

Whats really scary not until 06 did they change the gauge to semi read right. I believe the oil pressure gauge reads perfect all the time until the pressure drops under 5 pounds 02-05.

One time in my 96 when I came to a stop the oil light came on and then went off. Didn't come back on until I stopped again. No oil on dipstick. I check it all the time now.

I put an actual oil pressure gauge on my truck bc I don't trust the dummy gauge they put in these trucks.

I went and checked my oil right after I read this haah. I remember when I bought my truck the oil pressure was low. When I changed it, I only had like 6 and 1/4 qrts of oil on my engine. So I guess my gauge is working. When I changed it, it sits perfectly in the middle. Im gona keep and eye on it as I always do though

Not a castrol fan myself, I prefer valvoline but to each their own. 270,000 miles on my last vehicle running maxlife.

I am curious why you're running 5w-30? I have an 05 hemi and the manual suggests 5w-20. Probably has nothing to do with it as it's a multi viscosity oil and likely ok per the manual.

Up through 04 5W-30 was standard oil. They switched to 5W-20 across the board just to cover the MDS engines and made it cheaper to just use 1 grade of oil.

I wonder what Chrysler says about consumption on these engines with that mileage?

On my SRT-10 there was a bulletin from Chrysler that said - under 50K miles 1 quart per 750 miles. over 50K miles 1 quart per 500 miles. Yep. We all switched to 15/50 and literally - stopped the oil consumption completely. And the viper engine loved the thicker oil with the variable lifters.

Now these hemi's run on 20 weight? Jesus. Can you even go up to a 40 or 50 weight without issue?

Absolutely under no circumstances run anything above 5w30 in hotter climates, 5w20 in cooler. Anything beyond that viscosity will cause all kinds of problems with the MDS. There's no reason to run anything more viscous.

That's good to know. Respectfully 170K is a lot of miles but, it's not that many. If the routine maintenance was kept up. Question is - where is it going? If theres none underneath it when parked. I believe OP said no smoke either. It could still be consuming it without necessarily smoking. How about valve guide seals? Also wouldn't a compression test be worth doing. If it's drinking that much you would think it would be right there.
