Feather into the throttle to get the truck moving, then hammer it, if you just floor it from a dead stop you will probable spin the tires, not good if the guy next to you is gone.

I've always, held rpms to about 1500, then drop hammer in 4wd

Way I launch on my 76 is to hold 2000 rpm, dump the brake and hit half throttle, once it's moving, slam the gas and let the 4bbl open up.....but that's on a 39 year old truck.
