The 6.1 is just cheap and easy to come by, would prob be better with a comp 260. Are you looking to do it yourself or get a shop to do it?

Yes it will be. The 6.1 is a good cam for a RC/SB that will see the track but doesnt want to tune it with even a SC. My regrind on the 1st cam ran on stock tune for a few months. The 260 just has alot more TRQ. You could also get a custom cut cam.

I have heard that the 6.1 is a better route to go since you don't have to have ALL the supporting mods along with a hotter cam, is that true?

Eh depends. Guys with converts bennifit more from the larger cams, that being said a large cam will still work without them, just wont be working as effently. Im prime example I still have stock mans on the truck but have ran 2 diff cams. I know I will see better numbers with headers but just havent got around to it sadly. Aj being an 03 is hit and miss on running to large of a cam so a smaller one will be the better bet without taking a higher risk of going to big and ther truck wont run and he will have to change it again.

It also depends on if its a top end cam or torque monster. The top end cams need the converter to get up in the power band, my cam for example doesn't really starry building power until the 2500-3000rpm mark so my converter is a 2800very stall, the lowed cams don't "have" to have it since most of them start building power around the 1500-2000rpm mark. It will run better as long as the stall matches the cam but not necessary to feel the gains. Headers will just compound how well the cam performs, and you will get much better gains than just the cam alone or just the headers alone. Those two mods build on one another, same with the cai at this point.

One of my friends was sayin that his buddy had a stock 5.7, put a Comp 260 in it [with 6.1 springs and pushrods of course] and didnt do anything with the heads, he just had the bolt on mods such as headers and a tuner. That was all. Well, his motor blew because of the cam.....

^Did that guy have an A/F meter to make sure he wasnt going lean at WOT? Depending on the tuner, fuel, headers and a list of other stuff it leans out quick. Its also possible to bend every valve in the motor and crack the pistons of you dont put the cam back in correctly.

Cams don't blow engines. Incorrect installs and lack of tuning/monitoring do.

Well, if he didn't do anything with the heads then he didn't put in the 6.1 springs and rods then, that's working on the heads. I agree with George sounds like a bad install or lack of tuning. As with everything there is a right way and a wrong way to do things, sounds like he didn't do it the right way
