I'm new to this Forum. Came over from the F150 forum.

I have a 2004 Dodge ram 4.7 magnum V8 with 120K miles. I bought it used 2 months ago with a 6 mo warranty. The head gasket needs to be replaced. My mechanic said that it is difficult to remove and it would be better to replace the entire engine. Is he right? Can the head gasket be replaced?

Yes, your head gasket can be replaced. And if your mechanic said it would be better to replace the whole engine, I'd start looking for someone else to work on my vehicles

If it blew the gasket get the head checked. IMO while you are there I would pull both heads for new gaskets and farther inspection.

Thanks for replies. I'm going to see another mechanic tomorrow that does warranty work.

Good luck finding a new mechanic (current one needs to find a new profession).

It's unfortunately a fairly common issue on the 4.7s (To my understanding)

It's also a labor intensive process.
