They are actually about the same...neither kit is very loud when compared to the open box designs like K&N. The S&B has an enclosed airbox which reduces noise, and the Vararam seals off to the bottom of the hood which is insulated to keep noise down. You can hear them both, but it is faint when compared to an open box intake.
