Changed my oil today and noticed this nasty crude on the oil cap. It's not new and is really stuck on there. Any idea what this might?

Thanks!

Mine looks the same. I figured it was just the combination of oil and water condensation.

Thanks for the replies folks. I figured it might be normal bit I've never seen it on any other vehicle I've owned. This fully plastic cap might be the difference.

Mine looked the same awhile back. Cleaning attempts were to no avail, so I bought a new one off Amazon.

It means you dont check your oil often enough!

Haha just kidding, mostly. Its normal for anybody that never wipes off the inside of their cap :p
When i got my truck it had some under cap residue so i cleaned it in varsol and brake cleaner with a rag.
Now every time i check my oil i check and clean the condensation under the cap. Lots in the winter and very little in the summer.

Did an oil change on a jeep 3.7l today, similar oil cap but damn thing was swimming in white humidity gunk. I cleaned up the cap and filler neck as far as i could reach, but yeah, that guy obviously never looks under there.

I'm pretty sure there shouldn't be water in the oil.

It's not from water in the oil, it's from condensation in the air that is pulled into the crankcase through the fresh air make up line or generated from blow by. This is why people with catch cans see a big increase in the amount of fluid that accumulates in the cans in the winter months or where there's high humidity: there's more water in the atmosphere.

Plus it ends up there since it's the highest point in the system. Sometimes you get more if the engine oil isn't allowed to come up to proper operating temp, like short trips.
