Over the wknd I replaced the plugs, cleaned throttle box, and changed oil in my 2004 ram. The reccomended oil filter has a 3.66 outer diameter. It looks like this filter is too big as you can see a portion of the filter and gasket when looking down on the filter. It looks like a 3.0 inch od filter would fit correctly but most references say the larger filter is correct. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome. What name brand was on it? Could have just been an oversized filter. I have always ran the Mopar ones on my 04 and the wifes 05 gets either a Mopar or Napa Gold just depends on if she remembers to grab a filter from me.

OD isn't a good way to measure an oil filter. What brand and what part number did you use?

The 2 important things with an oil filter are:
Does it Thread on?
Gasket seat?

That's about it. It's pretty common for the oil filter to over-hang the mount. As long as the gasket is on the flat machined surface I wouldn't concern yourself.

Filters come in an array of sizes, as long as the threads are the same, and the gasket mating surface is the same, the size doesnt matter. they make extreme duty filters to replace the Mopar M-090 filter that is roughly the size of a maxwell house can, and holds nearly 2 quarts of oil.

Every response in here is good! When i got my truck it had a tiny lil penzoil filter on it and the mopar filter is significantly larger. Depending on the year the napa filter is 21085 or 27899, both of which are large like the mopar. I did an oil change on a 2012 or 13 hemi recently and it calls for a significantly smaller in size, 27060 i belive.
All that to say size doesnt matter, its the quality that counts! :p

The dealer ship put a filter that was smaller around then what the book says. I had the same question and was told that as long as the threads are the same and the gaskets are the same diameter it is ok for it to hang over. It does seem weird though.

Quick update. I installed the filter that the book said should go on it. It does look to big, but fits fine. No leaks or other problems.

I've run a FL1A filter on my 05 Hemi since day 1. I like the extra capacity.
