After doing some messing around my 180 stant just wont cutting it in the heat with the mechanical fan (sitting at 195). I had planned on going elec with that tstat but tossed in a 170 to see how it would respond. I tell ya its been doing great so far AI is putting my temps at 174-176 in traffic and 178 in park running for 20 mins. For those of yall in hotter areas I would look into it if your trucks getting warm and seeing some ST knock.
Part #s that all work:
Robert Shaw 383-170
Motorad 4127
Stant 32577
I got the Stant in mine and as advised by Sam drilled a small 1/16th weep hole in it due to it not having one. The Stant also had the double spring setup.

I thought 170* was pushing it as far as being to low.... Mine is bugging me that it still hits the 200*+ mark while sitting even with the 180* stat in there. But that will soon change. I want to get an aluminum radiator to replace the stocker and add in an Efan. actually in the prcoess of seeing if some of the parts I am after can be ordered now or not.

I've had the 170 degree t-stat in my truck for about three weeks now with no problems except my engine light coming on saying my trucks operating temp is to cool but I hope my diablo will turn it off.

Mine has not thrown that code yet. I have heard of some throwing that code even with the 180*. I think these PCMs have a mind of their own far as throwing codes. I will be sure to keep yall in the loop if mine does throw the code. The engine has about 2 hrs of run time on it since the 170* went in. Thats including 7 key cycles and 1 tune change.

Ryan I would honestly say try the 170* and see how it likes it. 20 min change and top off the rad and burp the system and see how the truck reacts. If it tossed the code Sean might be able to turn it off same as the code for cats.

I need to replace my radiator as it is and want the extra gain from losong the fan. Looking in the radiator, the fluid is bright green, looking in the overflow, its brown. So it needs to go. Figure with that and an efan my cooling issues should be gone

Update after 3 days of driving and 20 key cycles it finialy popped a PO128 low temp light. Im ok with that as long as my truck likes it in the heat and keeps my cylinder temps down like it has been doing.

I just got my DS Tuner on today and I think any one runing a that tuner would be good with the 170 my trucks running a bit warmer than it was previosly.

I am glad you mentioned that.

The stock tstat is around 213* and the cooling sytem has no problem maintaining within 10-15*, even on the hottest days.

Add to that the fact that the stock gauge doesn't really move much between 195* and 220*, and you realize that most folks have no idea just how much swing the stock setup has temperature wise.

Once you get a 180* tstat and a gauge, your eyes get fixated on checking that temp and when it goes over 185*, it bugs the heck out of you!

Its a double edge sword really. On one hand you get to monitor everything to make sure its all running the way it should, but on the other hand you see everything and where things should be running and where they are not running, so when something changes its a what the hell moment.

Yeah, bothers me when it moves too lol. More afraid im gonna damage the tstat than anything though. Only code im getting since installing the 180 is the windshield washer low one. Just been too lazy to take it off and clean it. Its weird though. Sometimes it comes on as soon as I start the truck. Sometimes it doesn't come on till I've been driving for a few minutes.
